The Women’s World Cup Final promises to be a thrilling contest between India and South Africa, both competing for their first-ever title. India is a favorite, having reached finals twice before, but South Africa enters strong with superior fielding skills and outstanding performances, particularly from batting ace Laura Wolvaardt, the tournament’s top run-scorer. Although both teams lost to Australia and England, South Africa defeated India in the group stages, adding an edge to their challenge. The final will showcase intense battles of skill as each team aims to claim the coveted championship.

India Favourites to take the Title


The Women’s World Cup has only been won by Australia, England and New Zealand, so Sunday’s final will see a new winner crowned. India have twice made it to the final (2017 and 2005) while South Africa made the semi-final three times in their seven previous appearances. South Africa have won six of their last seven matches at the World Cup, while India have lost three of their last five completed matches.

Strong Challengers for the Title


India and South Africa both lost their group matches to Australia and England, but South Africa holds the advantage having won their group match against India by three wickets. 

Catches Win Matches


The South Africans are also far superior in the field, with India dropping two catches and missing a stumping in the semi-final against Australia, along with giving away eight runs in overthrows. India have taken 35 catches in the tournament, they have also dropped 18 catches, missing three stumpings and endured 17 misfields.

Batting Stars at the World Cup


Skipper Laura Wolvaardt has been the batting star of the tournament, scoring 70, 31, 60*, 90, 31 and 169 in her last six innings. Wolvaardt is the tournament’s leading runscorer with 470 runs at an average of 67.14 (S/R 97.91), 81 runs higher than second-placed Smriti Mandhana. Wolvaardt’s 169 is the highest score of the tournament, coming off 143 balls with 20 fours and four sixes.

Hard Hitters


Nadine de Klerk leads the tournament’s strike-rate lists, scoring 190 runs (ave 63.33) at a strike-rate of 136.69. She is also level with India’s Richa Ghosh for the most sixes in the tournament (10), De Klerk’s coming off 139 balls compared to Ghosh’s 152 balls, as well as having hit the most sixes in an innings (5).

A Lethal bowling Attack


All-rounder Marizanne Kapp has the second-best bowling figures in an innings (5/20 against England) and has scored 56, 68* and 42 in her last four innings. Off-spinner Nondumiso Shangase has the tournament’s best bowling average (9.50), with Kapp in fifth place on 15.33, as well as taking fifth place on the economy rates list (3.83 runs per over).

Safe in the Field


Wolvaardt is joint third for catches in the field with seven in eight matches, while behind the stumps Sinalo Jafta has taken five in her six matches to date, placing her in joint fourth place for the tournament.
