Both England and South Africa come into this series in poor form. Given England’s struggles with the bat against India, I am backing the visitors to get a narrow win in Ben Stokes farewell ODI.

Over the last four matches between these sides each have won twice. They last met in 202 where England secured a two wicket win.

England Form

England come into this series off the back of a disappointing 2-1 series loss to India. The Jos Buttler captaincy rein has gotten off to a rocky start but they will be looking to rectify that here.

Run scoring has been England’s strength over the last five or six years, but against India they came up horribly short. They were bowled out for 110 in the 1st ODI, reached 246 in the second and were all out for 259 in the third.

Over the course of the three matches against India, only one England player passed the 50-run mark, that was Jos Buttler in the final game of the series. England lost that by five wickets after going into the match with the series at 1-1.

England Team News

Ben Stokes will play in the 1st ODI but has announced that will be his ODI farewell before retiring from the format. The side is expected to be largely the same as what faced India.

South Africa Form

South Africa are struggling in the ODI format and desperately need a series win here as they look for automatic qualification to the World Cup in 2023. This has become more important after CSA conceded the series in early 2023 to Australia.

In their two warm-up games against the England Lions, the Proteas batsmen scored some valuable runs. The bowlers however struggled on the flat pitch of Taunton.

Heinrich Klaasen looks in marvelous form after scoring a half century and a century in the two matches.

South Africa Team News

Quinton de Kock did not feature in the two warm-up games but should be in the side for the 1st ODI. Janneman Malan is his likely opening partner.

Klaasen has also been superb for the visitors, it is difficult to see how they drop him.

South Africa can upset the odds with a win in the 1st ODI. I am backing Heinrich Klaasen to top score after batting superbly in the two warm-up games.

For England, Jos Buttler is tipped to top the run scoring charts.
