South Africa vs Ireland Women 2nd ODI Predictions - Luus to power Proteas to series win

Editor
Last updated: 4 minutes ago

South Africa Women solidified their dominance over Ireland Women in their ODI series, winning the first match by seven wickets. Despite Ireland's improvements, particularly scoring over 200 in the 1st ODI, the Proteas have set a challenging pace. Key players like Sune Luus, who has posted impressive scores in her recent innings, and Nonkululeko Mlaba have been pivotal for South Africa. While Ireland's Sarah Forbes and Amy Hunter put up commendable scores, South Africa's batting depth and effective bowling gave them the upper hand.

South Africa vs Ireland Women Predictions

South Africa Women have totally dominated all of their matches against Ireland on this tour. Ireland showed great growth and resolve by topping 200 in the 1st ODI against a strong South African attack, so they have grown on this tour but they are still way off the pace set by the Proteas.

  • South Africa Women’s Sune Luus has scored 101*, 81, 37 & 66* in her last 4 innings.
  • South Africa Women’s Miane Smit scored a superb 56* against Ireland in the 1st ODI.
  • Ireland Women’s Sarah Forbes has scored 55, 54 & 42 in her last 4 innings.
  • Ireland Women’s Amy Hunter has scored 63, 29 & 32 in her last 5 innings.

Head-to-Head

South Africa Women have won their last five ODIs against Ireland Women by huge margins.

South Africa Women Form

South Africa made it three wins from five when they beat Ireland in the 1st ODI of their three-match series by seven wickets.

Tumi Sekhukhune (2/32) and Nonkululeko Mlaba (3/43) tore into the top-order as Ireland were reduced to 209/7 off their rain-reduced 47 overs. Eliz-Mari Marx was the most economical of the Proteas bowlers, sending down her eight overs for just 27 runs (econ 3.37).

All-rounders Suné Luus and Miané Smit took South Africa from 86/3 to victory at 211/3 in the 37th over. Both scored comfortable half-centuries - for Smit it was a maiden ODI half-century while for Luus it was her 18th, to add to one century in ODIs. Both ladies also picked up a wicket in the Ireland innings.

Ireland Women Form

Ireland Women’s unbeaten run of five ODI wins in a row ended when they lost to South Africa by seven wickets in the 1st ODI.

Openers Sarah Forbes (42) and Gaby Lewis (14) got Ireland off to a solid start, adding 45 runs in 11 overs. Forbes and Amy Hunter (32) then added 48 for the second wicket before they slipped to 139/5. Rebecca Stokell (39*) lifted Ireland to 209/ with some quick runs at the end.

Cara Murray (2/34, econ 5.66) made inroads into the Proteas top order, reducing them to 86/3, but it was the last wicket to fall. Orla Prendergast (1/31, econ 5.16) picked up the other wicket and kept a tight line.

South Africa Women & Ireland Women Team News

Ireland skipper Gaby Lewis reflected after the match on her side’s inability to close the Proteas down in their chase when they were reduced to 86/3.

“We were very positive even though we didn’t have a lot of runs on the board, but there was a lot of belief, there always is, but it is a pretty young bowling group so we will learn from this,” said Lewis after the game.

“It’s hard to pinpoint one moment but not having enough runs on the board was key and obviously it was probably a better wicket for us to bat on and I guess we didn't utilise that today.

“We’re going to rest, switch off mentally and go through the plans and review the game. Obviously different conditions for the next game so we’ll plan for that,” she added.

Verdict

I am backing South Africa Women to win. I am also backing Sune Luus to top score for the South Africa Women and Nonkululeko Mlaba to be the best bowler.

Sarah Forbes is a good bet to top score for the Ireland Women.
