South Africa finished second on the group stages table, losing only to Australia. The Proteas’ last group stage match saw them clinch a thrilling final ball win to dump India out of the tournament.

Masabata Klaas and Shabnim Ismail both took two wickets at under five runs an over but couldn’t prevent India from setting South Africa a target of 275 off 50 overs.

Needing to better their previous tournament best of 271/5 against Australia, Laura Wolvaardt and Lara Goodall added 125 for the second wicket to set up an exciting run chase. Mignon du Preez and Marizanne Kapp added 47 runs for the fifth wicket, followed by 17 runs off 9 balls from Chloe Tryon.

Wolvaardt top-scored with 80 off 79 balls and Du Preez hit the winning runs to end on 52*.

In their next match against Bangladesh, England were teetering on 96/4 after 26 overs before Sophia Dunkley’s brilliant 67 brought their innings back to life and helped them to reach 234/6 off their 50 overs.
