Sydney Thunder vs Hobart Hurricanes Predictions

The Thunder are in danger of missing out on the playoffs if they can’t pull in some wins. The Hurricanes lost their last match, but with four wins from six they have my vote to take this match.

  • Hobart Hurricanes’ Nikhil Chaudhary has scored 79, 34, 19 & 31 in his last 4 innings.
  • Hobart Hurricanes’ Ben McDermott has scored 69 & 49* in his last 5 innings.
  • Sydney Thunder’s Matthew Gilkes (165 runs) has a strike rate of 181.31 this season.
  • Sydney Thunder’s Sam Konstas has scored 28, 63 & 21 in his last 5 innings.

Head-to-Head

The Hurricanes have won four and lost none of their last five Big Bash matches against the Thunder. The other match was rained-out.

Sydney Thunder Form

After picking up their first win of the season in their third match, the Thunder went on to lose their next two matches. Their last match saw them lose to the Scorchers by 71 runs.

Matthew Gilkes has been the spine of the Thunder’s batting, scoring at over 180 runs per 100 balls. Sam Billings scored 51, 25 and 23 in a three-match stretch, but was knocked over for a duck in his last match.

Shadab Khan has been a key player for the Thunder, scoring 34, 41 and 25 in his four innings, and picking up figures of 2/36 and 4/24. Daniel Sams took 2/25 against the Heat and 4/51 in the last match against the Scorchers.

Hobart Hurricanes Form

After winning three matches in a row, the Hurricanes picked up their second defeat of the season when they lost to the Scorchers by 40 runs.

Nikhil Chaudhary and Ben McDermott are both in the top five run scorers in this season’s Big Bash. Matthew Wade has chipped in with scores of 25, 43* and 29. Macalister Wright (33, 22* & 16) has failed to kick on to bigger scores, but Mitchell Owen hasn’t scored above 10 since scoring 32 off 14 balls in their opening match against the Thunder.

Nathan Ellis (9 wickets) is joint second on the Big Bash wickets list, but has been going for 9.34 per over. Rishad Hossain has one wicket less, having played a key role in helping his side to wins with figures of 2/33, 3/33 and 2/34.

Sydney Thunder vs Hobart Hurricanes Team News

The Thunder are in desperate need of a win, so they have made two changes to their matchday squad against the second-placed Hurricanes. Right-arm paceman Wes Agar has replaced Reece Topley, who has left to play in the SA20. Nic Maddinson is back from injury and takes over from Blake Nikitaras.

The Thunder’s off-spinning all-rounder Chris Green admitted that in order to pick up wins “you’ve got to put in a full performance. We did that down in Canberra for our win against the Heat. In the other games we’ve shown patches and glimpses of what we can do, we just haven’t done it for long enough in both innings with both bat and ball. If we can get all three departments in order and gather that momentum, then the world’s our oyster,” said Green.

Following the home defeat to the Scorchers, the Hurricanes have brought in Will Prestwidge at the expense of Hugo Burdon.

Sydney Thunder (squad): Wes Agar, Tom Andrews, Cameron Bancroft, Sam Billings, Chris Green, Matthew Gilkes, Ryan Hadley, Shadab Khan, Sam Konstas, Nic Maddinson, Nathan McAndrew, Daniel Sams, Tanveer Sangha, David Warner.

Hobart Hurricanes (squad): Rehan Ahmed, Nikhil Chaudhary, Nathan Ellis, Rishad Hossain, Chris Jordan, Ben McDermott, Riley Meredith, Mitch Owen, Will Prestwidge, Billy Stanlake, Matthew Wade, Charlie Wakim, Tim Ward, Mac Wright.

Verdict

I am backing the Hurricanes to win, with Nikhil Chaudhary to top score.
