2026 T20 World Cup Journey
South Africa dominated Group D as they looked to make amends for losing in the final of the 224 T20 World Cup. The Proteas started with a 57-run win over Canada before needing two Super Overs to beat a highly competitive Afghanistan.
They then turned the tables on an in-form New Zealand, humbling them with a seven-wicket defeat before ending their group stage commitments with a six-wicket win.
South Africa would have been massively encouraged when they kicked-off the Super 8 stage with a 76-run win over India. They followed it up with an impressive nine-wicket win over the West Indies, before closing their Super 8 out with a five-wicket win over Zimbabwe.
World Cup Stars
The Proteas’ top-order has been on fire, and the middle–order has stepped up to the plate when called upon. At the moment they are the form side in the tournament, but they now face the vagaries of the knock-out stages against three opponents who all offer major competition on their day.
Captain Aiden Markram has had a magnificent World Cup, scoring 268 runs at an average of 53.60. Markram is 3rd on the runs list with three half-centuries in seven innings. Ryan Rickelton was a late call-up to the squad but took his chance magnificently, scoring 228 runs (6th, ave 38.00).
Dewald Brevis, Quinton de Kock and David Miller have each scored over 150 runs, with Miller averaging 84.00 at a strike-rate of 158.69.
The Proteas have three bowlers in the top five list of wicket-takers, led by Lungi Ngidi (3rd place, 12 wickets, ave 13.75). Corbin Bosch has proved himself a world-class competitor, picking up figures of 3/12, 2/12, 2/31 and 2/40 in the Proteas‘ last four matches. Bosch is joint 5th in the wickets list, along with Marco Jansen and two other bowlers with 11 wickets.
Dangerman Kagiso Rabada has had a quiet World Cup, snagging just four wickets at an economy rate of 7.98. While he has taken some punishment in the closing overs in the tournament, don’t bet against him pulling out a match-winning performance or two before the end of the tournament.
