Australia vs Oman T20 Cricket World Cup Predictions - Marsh to maul the Oman attack

Editor
Last updated: 2 minutes ago

Australia aims to finish strong in the World Cup by defeating Oman in their final group stage match. With notable performances by Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head in previous games, Australia is expected to dominate. Oman has previously suffered significant losses but boasts players like Hammad Mirza and Aamir Kaleem who have shown potential. Historically, Australia defeated Oman by 39 runs in their only T20I encounter. Predictions suggest Marsh and Mirza could lead scoring for their respective teams.

Australia vs Oman Predictions

Australia have had a terrible World Cup but will be motivated to end on something of a high by beating Oman in the final match of the tournament’s group stages. Oman have suffered three huge defeats and I’m backing Australia to take out their frustrations on them.

  • Australia’s Mitchell Marsh has scored 54 & 44 in his last 4 innings.
  • Australia’s Travis Head hit two sixes in his 29-ball 58 against Sri Lanka.
  • Oman’s Hammad Mirza scored 46 off 37 balls against Ireland.
  • Oman’s Aamir Kaleem hit two sixes in his 29-ball 50 against Ireland.

Head-to-Head

The two teams have met just once in T20Is, with Australia beating Oman by 39 runs back in the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Australia Form

Australia started their World Cup with a solid 67-run win over Ireland, only to lose their next game to Zimbabwe, followed by an eight-wicket defeat to Sri Lanka.

Mitchell Marsh (54 off 27) and Travis Head (56 off 29) added 104 for the first wicket off 8.3 overs to get Australia off to a great start. Sri Lanka fought back to reduce them to 130/4 before Josh Inglis (27 off 22) and Glenn Maxwell (22 off 15) lifted Australia to 160/4.

Sri Lanka then knocked off Australia’s last six wickets for just 21 runs to restrict them to a score of 181.

Marcus Stoinis (2/46) picked up a wicket with the eighth ball of the innings, following that up with the wicket of Kusal Mendis for 51 in the 13th over. None of the other Australian bowlers enjoyed any success as Sri Lanka coasted home with two overs in the bank.

Oman Form

Oman’s World Cup has been highly forgettable, losing their three matches by eight wickets, 105 runs and 96 runs respectively.

Shakeel Ahmed (3/33, econ 8.25) produced an inspired spell of bowling, knocking over Ireland’s top three batters to limit them to 45/3 after five overs. Aamir Kaleem (1/29, econ 7.25) was Oman’s most economical bowler, but Ireland smashed their way to 235/5 off their 20 overs with some power hitting in the last three overs.

Oman were in trouble at 24/2 before Aamir Kaleem (50 off 29) and Hammad Mirza (46 off 37) added 73 for the third wicket to put them in a strong position at 97/2 in the 11th over. Ireland cut through Oman’s last eight wickets to dismiss them for 139 off 18 overs for a 96-run victory.

Australia vs Oman Team News & Squads

Aussie skipper Mitchell Marsh was dejected during the post-match press conference that followed his side's 8-wicket defeat to Sri Lanka.

“Just disappointing. We know at our best that we can make big scores, but we lost our way towards the back end. Could not get a partnership going and they bowled well. We have not been at our best,” said Marsh.

Oman captain Jatinder Singh admitted during the post-match interviews that he felt his side were in a good position before Zimbabwe took the match away from them.

"When we took the first two wickets we were in the game, but they built a partnership after 10 overs. We lost too many wickets for some 25 runs at the end. We have to keep our heads high. We lack experience and exposure, but we can gain that by playing the top sides," said Singh.

Australia (possible XI): Travis Head (c), Josh Inglis, Cameron Green, Matt Renshaw, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Matt Kuhnemann, Adam Zampa.

Oman (possible XI): Aamir Kaleem, Jatinder Singh (c), Hammad Mirza, Wasim Ali, Mohammad Nadeem, Jiten Ramanandi, Vinayak Shukla, Sufyan Mehmood, Nadeem Khan, Shah Faisal, Jay Odedra.

Verdict

I am backing Australia to win. I am also backing Mitchell Marsh to top score for Australia.

Hammad Mirza is a good bet to top score for Oman.
