England vs Pakistan T20 Cricket World Cup Super 8 Predictions - Salt to fire England to the brink of the semis

Last updated: 5 minutes ago

England will face Pakistan in a critical T20 match that could determine semi-final qualifications. England, coming off a strong win against Sri Lanka, are highlighted as favorites, with players like Phil Salt and Jofra Archer expected to shine. Pakistan, on the other hand, demonstrated strong performances from Sahibzada Farhan and Shadab Khan in previous games. Both teams have their key players in form, making this an exciting clash. The stakes are high as both sides compete to keep their tournament dreams alive.

England vs Pakistan Predictions

Pakistan finished second in their group, having claimed three wins from their four matches. Their first match in the Super 8 was rained-off, giving them a point, but if they lose to England they will most likely be out of the running for the semis. England put in a brilliant performance to roll Sri Lanka after scoring just 146 off their 20 overs and are my choice to take this match.

  • England’s Phil Salt has scored 30, 28 & 62 in his last 4 innings.
  • England’s Jacob Bethell has scored 55, 33, 32 & 23 in his last 5 innings.
  • Pakistan’s Sahibzada Farhan hit four sixes in his 58-ball 100* against Namibia.
  • Pakistan’s Shadab Khan has taken 2/26 and 3/19 in his last three matches as well as scoring 46, 30 & 36* in his last 5 innings.

Head-to-Head

England have won three of their last five T20Is against Pakistan, with the other two matches being rained-off.

England Form

England made it three wins on the bounce when they beat Sri Lanka by 51 runs in their first match in the Super 8s.

Phil Salt held the innings together with a punchy innings of 62 off 40 balls as England slipped to 68/4. Will Jacks (21 off 14) was the only other batter to make it past 14 as England struggled to reach 146/9 off their 20 overs.

Jofra Archer (2/20, econ 6.66) and Will Jacks (3/22, econ 5.50) demolished Sri Lanka’s top order, reducing the co-hosts to 34/5 in the sixth over. Liam Dawson (2/27, econ 6.75) and Adil Rashid (2/13, econ 3.5) cleaned up Sri Lanka’s tail as they were bowled out for 95 in the 17th over.

Pakistan Form

After losing to India by 61 runs, Pakistan secured their Super 8 spot by beating Namibia in their last match in the group stages. They then had the frustration of having their match against New Zealand rained-out.

Sahibzada Farhan continued his fine form with the bat by scoring 100* off 58 balls, batting through the innings as Pakistan racked up 199/3 off their 20 overs.

Skipper Salman Agha (38 off 23) added 67 for the second wicket with Farhan, after which Shadab Khan scored a whirlwind 36* off 22 balls.

Shadab then picked up 3/19 (econ 4.75) as Pakistan ripped through Namibia’s top order. Usman Tariq (4/16, econ 4.57) closed Namibia’s innings up as they ended three short of 100 runs.

England vs Pakistan Team News & Squads

England skipper Harry Brook celebrated his birthday as England beat Sri Lanka, and he was confident that his team has the goods to go far in the tournament during his post-match interview.

"Beautiful birthday present, and an awesome effort to get over the line and bowl them out for 100. I feel like we can play on any surface. Jos hasn't fired yet, but if we get on a good wicket he's going to get a hundred. Once we figure the powerplay out and get on top with the bat, we're going to be a hard team to beat,” said Brook.

Speaking with the TV commentators after the win over Namibia, Pakistan captain Shadab Khan was buoyant about his side’s prospects for the rest of the World Cup.

“There are eight good teams, so it will be a tough stage, and all matches will be high-pressure games. We are on the right track to achieve the goal of winning the World Cup, and we are following a process,” said Shadab.

England squad: Harry Brook (c), Tom Banton, Jos Buttler, Phil Salt, Jacob Bethell, Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid.

Pakistan (possible XI): Sahibzada Farhan, Saim Ayub, Salman Ali Agha (c), Babar Azam, Usman Khan, Khawaja Nafay, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Abrar Ahmed, Usman Tariq

Verdict

I am backing England to win. I am also backing Phil Salt to top score for England.

Sahibzada Farhan is a good bet to top score for Pakistan.
