England vs West Indies T20 Cricket World Cup Predictions - England to see off the West Indies on the back of Brook’s bat

Editor
Last updated: 2 hours ago

England heads into their next World Cup match with a narrow victory over Nepal, thanks to key performances from Harry Brook and Sam Curran. Meanwhile, the West Indies secured a dominant win against Scotland, with Shimron Hetmyer shining both with the bat and in the field. Despite the West Indies' recent form, England's recent head-to-head advantage suggests they are favorites. Potential top scorers include Harry Brook for England, while Shimron Hetmyer is expected to lead for West Indies.

England vs West Indies Predictions

England survived a major scare against low-ranked Nepal in their opening match of the World Cup, while the West Indies pulled off a convincing 35-run over Scotland. England have won their last five T20Is in a row, while the West Indies recently went down 2-1 to South Africa, so I’m backing England’s all-round depth to take the two points.

  • England’s Harry Brook has scored 136*, 36 & 53 in his last 4 innings.
  • England’s Jacob Bethell hit four sixes in his 35-ball 55 against Nepal.
  • West Indies’ Shimron Hetmyer hit six sixes in his 36-ball 64 against Scotland.
  • West Indies’ Brandon King has scored 47, 27, 49 & 35 in his last 5 innings.

Head-to-Head

England have won three and lost one of their last five T20Is against the West Indies. One match was rained-out, and England’s three wins came in their last series against the West Indies, which they won 3-0.

England Form

England followed up their 3-0 series win over Sri Lanka by squeaking home against Nepal in their opening match of the World Cup.

Nepal had England at 57/3 in the seventh over before Jacob Bethell (55 off 35) and Harry Brook (53 off 32) smashed seven sixes between them as they took the initiative back. Nepal kept the pressure on England and had them at 157/6 off 18.2 overs, but Will Jacks hit four sixes off 18 balls in scoring 39 to lift England to 184/7 off their 20 overs.

Nepal took the England attack to task with a flurry of early boundaries, hitting Jofra Archer, Luke Wood and Adil Rashid for over 10 runs to the over apiece. Liam Dawson (2/21, econ 5.25) and Sam Curran (1/27, econ 6.75) wrestled the initiative back as England scraped home by four runs in a match they looked set to lose.

West Indies Form

After losing to Afghanistan in their warm-up match, the West Indies bounced back with a comprehensive win over Scotland.

The West Indies top order have been in good form through some recent series as well as the SA20. Brandon King, Rovman Powell, Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford all chipped in with runs, but it was in-form Shimron Hetmyer who was the star of the show, blasting 64 off just 36 balls as the West Indies posted a competitive score of 182/5.

The West Indies attack dominated Scotland's top-order, reducing them to 37/3 before a middle-order revival. They rolled Scotland for 147 after snapping up seven wickets for just 32 runs. Jason Holder (3/30, econ 7.82) was superb with the ball, but it was Romario Shepherd who ended Scotland’s resistance with a hat-trick in the 17th over to take his side to the brink of a comfortable win. Shepherd ended with figures of 5/20 (econ 6.66).

England vs West Indies Team News & Squads

England have made one change to their side for the crucial clash with the West Indies, bringing Jamie Overton in for Luke Wood, who was one of three England bowlers to go for more than 10 runs to the over against Nepal.

Speaking to Sky Sports, England’s star all-rounder Sam Curran revealed that the England  side were feeling confident and settled. "I think we are really confident as a side in our roles and stuff like that. With Harry Brook taking over we are getting used to his style of captaincy, which has been great,” said Curran.

"We know how World Cup play is played, and it is very different to bilateral series. To get those two points was really big. I was standing in the field thinking 'wow, if we lose this, what is going to be the equation for qualifying?' Now we can smile with two points and we learnt a lot from that game," added Curran.

Speaking at the televised, post-match presentation after their win over Scotland, Player of the Match Shimron Hetmyer admitted that he enjoyed his spectacular catch even more than his 36-ball score of 64. "I've been doing some work on my fielding for the past while so I'm happy to be able to contribute in that way,” said Hetmyer.

The left-handed batter admitted that, while he enjoys finishing an innings in T20 and letting loose with the bat, his  preferred position is higher up the order.

“If I have to choose I'll stay up top. It's just about mindset, really. Batting at No. 3, the ball comes on a little bit faster, so it's just to get into position as early as possible and to execute. Going forward I think we can be more than competitive. We have the potential to go as far as the final but we need to take it one game at a time," added Hetmyer.

England (possible XI): Phil Salt, Jos Buttler, Will Jacks, Harry Brook (c), Tom Banton, Jacob Bethell, Sam Curran, Jamie Overton, Liam Dawson, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid.

West Indies (possible XI): Shai Hope (c), Brandon King, Shimron Hetmyer, Sherfane Rutherford, Rovman Powell, Jason Holder, Romario Shepherd, Matthew Forde, Akeal Hosein, Gudakesh Motie, Shamar Joseph.

Verdict

I am backing England to win. I am also backing Harry Brook to top score for England.

Shimron Hetmyer is a good bet to top score for the  West Indies.
