India have enjoyed a long period of dominance over Pakistan in T20Is, and their current top order and bowling attack are in red-hot form. The co-hosts and are clear favourites to beat a Pakistan side that boasts some star players but lacks the depth that India have at their disposal.

India Form

India made it two wins from their opening two matches in the World Cup when they beat Namibia by 93 runs after posting an imposing 209/9 off their 20 overs.

Suryakumar Yadav has been in terrific form, with his match-saving 84* in the opener against the USA setting the tone for his side for the tournament. Hardik Pandya has also been in form with bat and ball, scoring 42, 30 and 52 in his last four matches, along with taking 2/21 in the win over Namibia.

Ishan Kishan is another high-scoring Indian top-order batter who is in form, having scored 28, 103, 53, 20 and 61 in his last five knocks.

Varun Chakravarthy devastated the Namibian top-order, knocking over three of their top five with figures of 3/7 (econ 3.50). Axar Patel has been in terrific form with the ball, picking up 2/24 and 2/20 in his two matches in the World Cup on the back of figures of 3/33 and 1/2 leading up to the World Cup.

Pakistan Form

Pakistan followed their last-over win against the Netherlands in their opener with a 32-run win againsts the USA in their second match of the tournament.

Sahibzada Farhan (73 off 41) was the backbone of the Pakistan innings, seeing his side through to 143/4 in the 16th over. He added 81 for the third wicket with Babar Azam, who is playing himself into form with 46 off 32 balls to follow on from his 50* off 36 balls against Australia in the lead-up to the World Cup.

Shadab Khan then launched five boundaries in a 12-ball blitz on the USA attack that saw him score 30 runs to lift Pakistan to a very competitive score of 190/9.

The USA got off to a good start but couldn’t keep track with the asking rate, ending on 158/8 off their 20 overs. Shadab Khan (2/26, econ 6.50) made early inroads by removing two of the USA’s top three batters, while Usman Tariq kept the pressure up with figures of 3/27 (econ 6.75).

Abrar Ahmed (1/30, econ 7.50) and Mohammad Nawaz (1/21, econ 7.00) played their part in keeping the USA batters in check.

Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav admitted during the pre-match press conference that his top-order had under-performed despite winning their first two matches.

"We had a scratchy start – we can't run away from the fact. There's no excuse. Everyone has played a lot of cricket, and the batters should have their own plans on a tricky wicket. We started well but had a hiccup, but then covered it well. It's the beauty of T20 cricket," said Yadav.

The match between these two sides was almost called off by Pakistan in the light of Bangladesh’s withdrawal from the tournament due to security concerns around playing their group-stage matches in India.

"The game should be played in that spirit of cricket. What I expect doesn't matter, but I do feel the game should be played in the way it has been played since cricket started. Rest is up to them [India], whatever they want to do," said Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha in a press conference on Saturday.
