India vs South Africa Predictions

India and South Africa are both undefeated and have played some powerful cricket, but both have shown signs of vulnerability. India’s home advantage should pay off as the Proteas front up to the tournament favourites.

If the Proteas bat first they will likely push India to the edge, but chasing a big India target might prove a challenge for the Proteas on many fronts. I’m backing India for the win, but backing the Proteas offers the reward of enticing odds for a team that is very capable of taking the hosts down.

  • India’s Ishan Kishan (176 runs, S/R 202.29) is 3rd in the World Cup strike-rates list.
  • India’s Shivam Dube hit six sixes in his 31-ball 66 against the Netherlands.
  • South Africa’s Aiden Markram (178 runs, ave 59.33) is 4th in the World Cup runs list.
  • South Africa’s Ryan Rickelton has scored 44, 33, 61, 21 & 30 in his last 5 innings.

Head-to-Head

India have won three and lost one of their last five T20Is against South Africa. The other match was rained-off.

India Form

India made it four wins from their four group stage matches when they beat the Netherlands by just 17 runs at Ahmedabad. India posted 193/6 and the Netherlands replied with 176/ 7. There are runs aplenty in this pitch, but I’m banking on the Proteas restricting India to under 191 runs when they bat.

Ishan Kishan has been the mainstay of the Indian top-order, scoring 176 runs at a strike-rate of 202.29. Kishan is 3rd in the World Cup strike-rate list and 5th in the runs list.

Just behind Kishan is skipper Suryakumar Yadav, who has scored 162 runs at an average of 54.00. Yadav scored a match-saving 84* in the opening match against the USA, and followed that up with cameos of 32 and 34 in his last two matches.

Varun Chakravarthy has been in great form with the ball during the tournament. He picked up 1/24 in the opener, following that up with figures of 3/7, 2/17 and 3/14. Chakravarthy is 5th in the World Cup economy rates list, conceding just 62 runs off the 72 balls he has bowled in the tournament (econ 5.16).

Arshdeep Singh has been bowling tight and picking up wickets, with figures of 5/51,1/29, 2/18, 1/36 and 0/22 in his last five matches.

South Africa Form

South Africa made it four wins from four when they demolished the UAE by six wickets with over six overs to spare.

The Proteas top order is in superb form, with all of their top six scoring runs, led by Aiden Markram (59, 86* and 28), Quinton de Kock (25, 59, and 20), Ryan Rickelton (33, 61, 21 and 30), David Miller (39*, 20* and 24*) and Dewald Brevis (23, 21 and 36).

With the success of the top five there has been little chance for Tristan Stubbs, but he hit out for 34* in his one real chance against Canada as well as starring in the Super Overs against Afghanistan.

Corbin Bosch bowled economically in his first three matches, picking up a wicket in each match. In his last match he picked up 3/12 against the UAE. Lungi Ngidi was rested for the match against the UAE ahead of the Super 8s after taking 4/31, 3/26 and 1/34 in his first three matches.

India vs South Africa Team News & Squads

India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel, spoke about the strength of the South African squad when he spoke at the pre–match post conference.

"They are a team that’s full of confidence. They have got guys at the top who are in form. In terms of weaknesses, there aren’t many," said Morkel.

"We know that their top order gives them that momentum, with Quinton and Aiden up front in good form and hitting the ball very well. We will definitely put our best foot forward to try and get those early wickets," added Morkel.

Speaking to the media ahead of South Africa’s clash with India, Proteas  head coach, Shukri Conrad remarked that South Africa’s World Cup is really only starting now with the Super 8s.

“This is the biggest match of the competition thus far. The first half of the group stages was the anxious bit for me. This is now the excitement," said Conrad.

"Pressure is a big thing but it's pressure both for us and them. I think we all talk about the pressure of playing against the top side, but we're not quite aware of what the pressures they are under," added Conrad.

Verdict

I am backing India to win. I am also backing Ishan Kishan to top score for India.

Aiden Markram is a good bet to top score for South Africa.
