India vs West Indies Predictions

India and the West Indies have both won all of their games in the World Cup with the exception of their Super 8 clashes with the Proteas. This match is a winner-takes-all shootout for a place in the semi-finals between two high-powered batting line-ups. I’m backing India because of their home ground advantage but especially as their bowling attack has more teeth than the West Indies line-up.

After a perfect Group stage, India lost to South Africa by 76 runs but bounced back by beating Zimbabwe by 72 runs.

India’s batters hit their stride against the Zimbabwe attack, racking up 256/4 off their 20 overs. Their top six all scored 24-plus, with Abhishek Sharma (55 off 30) and Hardik Pandya (50* off 23) each hitting four sixes.

Arshdeep Singh (3/24, econ 6.00) was the pick of the Indian bowlers as they choked down on the Zimbabwe batters. Zimbabwe finished their 20 overs on 184/6. Varun Chakravarthy (1/35, econ 8.75) and Axar Patel (1/35, econ 8.75) both also enjoyed success with the ball.

West Indies Form

After a run of six wins on the trot, the West Indies suffered their first loss of the World Cup when they were beaten by South Africa by nine wickets.

The West Indies top-order collapsed to 83/7 in the 11th over after a promising start by openers Brandon King (21 off 11) and Shai Hope (16 off 6). The West Indies recovered to reach 176/8 off their 20 overs thanks to some big hitting by Jason Holder (49 off 31) and Romario Shepherd (52 off 37).

The West Indies struggled to contain South Africa’s openers, with Roston Chase (1/46) making the breakthrough in the 8th over. It was their last bowling success as the Proteas stormed to a nine-wicket win.

Speaking during the post-match interview, India skipper Suryakumar Yadav was proud that his top-order batters had all performed in their Super 8 win over Zimbabwe.

“There were contributions from all batters and that was heartening to see. We could have been more clinical with the ball, but a win is a win. We need to tighten out screws ahead of the WI game. From the bowling point of view, we could have been smarter. When we are in such situations, we need to be courageous,” said Yadav.

West Indian captain Shai Hope admitted during his post-match interview that losing a lot of wickets in the powerplay cost his side dearly.

“We were 40-50 short. I must commend the guys in the bottom half for giving us a chance. It was one of those days. I thought we didn't get enough runs on the board, and it was hard for the bowlers to pull it back. Everything will not be easy,” said Hope.
