The West Indies moved to the top of their Super 8 group with a massive win over Zimbabwe after some sensational hitting by their batting stars.

Shimron Hetmyer (85 off 34) and Rovman Powell (59 off 35) blasted the Zimbabwe attack to all corners as the West Indies raced to a massive 254/6 off their 20 overs.

Sherfane Rutherford (31* off 13) and Romario Shepherd (21 off 10) gave the innings an added boost in the final overs.

Gudakesh Motie (4/28, econ 7.00) starred with the ball again for the West Indies, knocking over three of Zimbabwe’s top six batters. Akeal Hosein (3/28, econ 7.00) and Matthew Forde (2/27, econ 7.36) played their part in demolishing Zimbabwe’s resistance.

South Africa Form

South Africa made it five wins from five in this World Cup when they beat tournament favourites India by 76 runs.

South Africa’s in-form top-order were knocked over inside four overs by sharp Indian bowling, leaving the Proteas in a mess at 20/3. David Miller once again rose to the challenge, slamming 63 off just 35 balls to pull his side back into the match.

Miller and Dewald Brevis (45 off 29) added 97 for the fourth wicket, with Tristan Stubbs joining the party by clubbing 44* off 24 balls, including one four and three sixes. The Proteas ended their innings on an imposing score of 187/7 off their 20 overs.

Marco Jansen was once again the star with the ball for South Africa, knocking over three of India’s top six in returning figures of 4/22 (econ 5.73). Corbin Bosch (2/12, econ 4.00) picked up two top-five wickets, while Keshav Maharaj mopped up the tail, taking 3/24 (econ 8.00) as the Proteas rolled India for 111 off 18.5 overs.

West Indies skipper Shai Hope described the batting of Shimron Hetmyer and Rovman Powell as “a joy to watch” when interviewed after his team’s huge win over Zimbabwe.

“It was a joy to watch. Rovman also added to his run tally. So it was great. I didn't think it would spin as much as it did today, especially when the leggie bowled in the first innings. The way it was spinning was good to see,” said Hope.

“We tend to neglect how important time away from the game is. Motie has used the time away from the game well and has brought something beneficial for us with the wrist spin. Great to see him contributing,” added Hope.

South African captain Aiden Markram expressed his joy during the post-match interviews at what he described as a “great performance” after his team had beaten India by 76 runs in their first game in the Super 8s.

“The boys assessed the pitch early and had to adapt to their plans. The start to the comp was tough, but tonight they were brilliant. The partnership between Brevis and Miller kept us in the game,” said Markram, who added that his team were very aware of the challenge posed by their next opponents, the West Indies.

“They are a dangerous side. Big game for us. It is important we rock up and take it on full steam again,” added Markram.
