South Africa broke a two-match losing streak by beating the West Indies by nine wickets in the 1st T20I in Paarl.

George Linde (3/25, econ 6.25) and Corbin Bosch (2/35, econ 8.75) knocked over five of the West Indies’ top six as they limited the visitors’ top order to 173/7 off their 20 overs. Keshav Maharaj (2/44) picked up two top six wickets but was taken for 10 boundaries.

Lhuan-dre Pretorius (44 off 28) and Aiden Markram (86* off 47) got the innings off to a great start with a stand of 83 in eight overs. Ryan Rickelton (40* off 32 balls) saw the Proteas home by adding an unbroken 93 for the second wicket with Markram.

West Indies Form


After breaking their run of defeats with a win against Afghanistan in the final match of their series, the West Indies tasted defeat again when they lost to the Proteas in the 1st T20I of their World Cup warm-up series.

The West Indies’ top order slipped to 79/4, with only Brandon King (27 off 16) getting on top of the Proteas’ attack. Shimron Hetmyer (48 off 32) and Rovman Powell (29* off 25) gave the West Indies hope by adding 74 for the sixth wicket.

Roston Chase was the only West Indies bowler to taste success with the ball, picking up 1/31 (econ 7.75). The rest of the attack all went for more than 9.5 runs to the over as the Proteas bludgeoned their way to a powerful victory.

SA skipper Aiden Markram top-scored and was delighted with the win. “It was a nice night out and the boys looked good in all departments. Pitch played really well. When we batted, it was coming out even better under lights. Rickelton is in good form. Not easy walking outside the powerplay when you're not used to it. There are guys who aren't here who are good cricketers and we have great depth. It's a good space to be in for the national team,” said Markram.

West Indies captain Roston Chase paid tribute to the Proteas. "Kudos to South Africa as they restricted us to a below-par total. We wanted to get 190 initially but we didn't have any big partnerships. Then we were poor in the powerplay with the ball and they knocked it around with ease. It's up to the batters to take their innings deep and you have to take calculated risks,” said Chase.
