Jannik Sinner remains favourite to win the Australian Open and while Shelton should challenge the world No. 1, I don't foresee an upset. The tiebreak and games market has value.

Head to Head

Jannik Sinner leads 8-1 against Ben Shelton in nine previous encounters. Shelton won their first ever match, but since then it has been all Sinner.

Ben Shelton Form

Ben Shelton went on a great run of form in July, reaching the Washington Open semi-finals before winning the Canada Masters. He is entrenched in the Top 10 and reached two Grand Slam semi-finals.

The left-hander ended 2025 with four straight defeats and had a poor start to the season in Auckland. He was beaten 7-5 6-3 by Sebastian Baez in the quarter-finals, saving 6/11 break points.

The 23-year-old has improved in Melbourne where he registered straight sets wins against Ugo Humbert, Dane Sweeny and Valentin Vacherot. He lost the first set to Casper Ruud in the fourth round, recovering to get through 3-6 6-4 6-3 6-4.

Jannik Sinner Form

Jannik Sinner ended 2026 with 15 straight wins, dropping only one set in that run. He concluded with the ATP Finals title, beating Carlos Alcaraz in the final.

The World No.2 was on target for an easy win in the Australian Open first round, leading 6-2 6-1 when Hugo Gaston retired. He beat James Duckworth 6-1 6-4 6-2 in under two hours.

The Italian was in trouble in the third round before beating Eliot Spizzirri in 4 sets. The extreme heat policy helped Sinner overcome cramp and maintain his winning streak.
