This series has been ultra competitive despite England being 2-0 up going into the final match. It took a record run chase in the last Test to win so New Zealand are far from out of it.

England lead the series 2-0 with one match to play. They beat New Zealand by five wickets in the 2nd Test in Nottingham.

England Form

England have already secured the series win after winning the opening two Test matches. Both fixtures were close and could easily have fallen in New Zealand’s favour.

On a great batting surface, New Zealand scored 553 runs batting first in Nottingham. England responded with 539 as Ollie Pope scored 145 and Joe Root 176 runs.

The hosts removed New Zealand for 285 in the second innings, leaving themselves needing 299 to win in the final innings. It looked like New Zealand were heading towards victory before a magnificent innings of 136 off 92 balls by Jonny Bairstow saw England home.

England Team News

England captain Ben Stokes missed training despite testing negative for COVID. There have been reports of an outbreak but according to the coaches it has been overplayed.

Jamie Overton has joined the squad and is likely to debut. With the India Test just over a week away the selectors may look to rest a bowler or two.

New Zealand Form

The Black Caps will be extremely disappointed in this series. They are 2-0 down but could and perhaps should be the reverse. They have failed in key moments when on top in both matches.

Daryl Mitchell scored 190 and Tom Blundell 106 to lead New Zealand to a superb 553 first innings total. They only had a narrow 15-run lead as the hosts went on to score 539.

Mitchell again top scored with 62 runs in the second innings as New Zealand were bowled out for 284, leaving England needing 299 to win. The Black Caps had England at 93-4 before Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes put on a stunning 179-run partnership to take the hosts to victory.

Black Caps Devon Conway has been in five day isolation after testing positive for COVID. Kyle Jamieson is ruled out of the last test due to injury.
