England vs West Indies Preview & Betting Tips

England take on West Indies in the 1st Test at the Ageas Bowl, starting on 8 July 2020. Ben Stokes and Ollie Pope have been very impressive in 2020 and are expected to shine once again.

England Form & News

England return to Test action following a successful tour of South Africa at the start of the year. They won the Tests series 3-1 against the Proteas.

In their last Test, England posted 400 runs batting first at the Wanderers in Johannesburg. Zak Crawley, Joe Root, and Ollie Pope all scored 50+ runs. In response, South Africa were bowled out for a paltry 183, with Mark Wood grabbing figures of 5-46.

England achieved 248 runs in their second innings, before bowling South Africa out for 274. England won by a huge 191 runs.

Ben Stokes, Joe Root, and Ollie Pope were the stars in England's dominance during the four-match Test tour and will be looking to keep that form going against the West Indies.

England captain Joe Root is almost guaranteed to miss some if not the entire series as the birth of his child is expected. Ben Stokes is the favourite to take over the captaincy.

West Indies Form & News

The West Indies are on a poor run of form, losing three of their last four Test matches. They arrive in England having not taken to the field last November. Their previous Test match did, however, end in a nine-wicket win over Afghanistan in Lucknow.

After winning the toss, the West Indies bowled first. Afghanistan were dismissed for just 187 runs.  Shamarh Brooks notched a career high 111 runs as the Windies were all out for 277 runs.

Afghanistan managed just 120 runs in their second innings, leaving the West Indies with a tiny target of 33 runs. The West Indies cruised to the paltry total with nine wickets in hand.

History is not on the side of the West Indies. They have won just a single Test (drawn 3) in England in their last 20 tours.

The West Indies have announced a 25-man squad but we'll take a closer look at who will be starting closer to the time.

England vs West Indies Match Up

The West Indies are not the batting side they once were, but the hope is that a young looking squad will start to put that right soon. The real test will be how they manage the swinging ball in England. In terms of the hosts, they are in great Test form and will be confident of brushing aside the visitors.
