Toulouse are favourites to claim their fifth European Champions Cup on Saturday in London. They have a very good record against La Rochelle, so my best bet is a Toulouse win.

Toulouse have won six of their last seven matches against La Rochelle. Their last match took place earlier this season in the Top 14 with Toulouse winning 14-11 away. This will be the first ever meeting between the two in European competition.

La Rochelle Form

La Rochelle have never been this far in the European Champions Cup. They do have some experience however after reaching the final of the Challenge Cup last season where they lost to Clermont.

The French rookies were convincing in reaching the final though. They beat Sale Sharks 45-21 in the quarter-final. That was followed by a superb 32-23 victory over Leinster in the semi-final at home.

Much like their opponents, their form has dropped off somewhat over the last few weeks. After reaching the final, La Rochelle suffered two consecutive defeats to Brive and Montpellier in the Top 14.

Last week La Rochelle managed to bounce back with a 59-0 home win over the already relegated Agen.

La Rochelle have been very impressive this season under coach Ronan O’Gara. He is considered one of the finest young coaches on the circuit at the moment.

O’Gara will ensure his side continues their ball-in-hand approach, which could backfire if they don’t get on the front foot early on.

La Rochelle have no injury concerns so they will be at full strength.

Toulouse Form

Toulouse have all the pedigree coming into the European Champions Cup final. They have won this title a total of four times already, although not since 2010. Should they make it five on Saturday they will be the most successful side in European rugby history.

Toulouse reached this stage of the Champions Cup by beating Clermont 21-12 in the quarter-final before defeating Bordeaux-Begles 21-19 in the semi’s.

Since that semi-final win things have not gone according to plan for Toulouse. They suffered a heavy 44-10 defeat at Toulon the week after and then lost 32-28 at home to Bayonne.

In a big blow for Toulouse, captain Julien Marchand was handed a four-week suspension following a dangerous tackle in their semi-final win.

Star South African winger, Cheslin Kolbe returns to the side after being rested against Bayonne at the weekend.

Antoine Dupont will be crucial for Toulouse, he is the top try scorer in the competition with four and is widely considered the best scrumhalf in the world.
