Rebels vs Waratahs Predictions

The Waratahs have made a dismal start to the season and look the likely candidates for the wooden spoon. They have the worst defensive record in Super Rugby AU 2021, so my tip is for the Rebels to win the encounter by 13 points or more.

  • Rebels have conceded under 2 tries per match over their last 3 matches.
  • Rebels won their last home match against the Waratahs by 19 points.
  • Waratahs have conceded 16 tries in their last 3 matches.
  • Waratahs have lost 2 of their last 3 matches by 34 & 51 points.
  • Waratahs have lost their last 3 matches.
  • Waratahs average 11 points per match over their last 3 matches.

Head to Head

Waratahs have claimed victories in six of their last eight meetings with the Rebels.

However, the Rebels have won two of their last three clashes with the Sydney-based outfit.

Rebels Form

After losing their opening two matches of Super Rugby AU, the Rebels managed to get their first victory last time out. All three of their matches have been decided by three or less points.

A 23-21 loss to the Reds was followed by another agonising 27-24 defeat to the Brumbies. In both matches the Rebels lost the match in the dying stages.

In their last match, the Rebels beat the Western Force 10-7. It was a poor game of rugby with both teams struggling to put together any cohesive attacking rugby.

The Rebels have only scored one try in their three matches but have the perfect opportunity to rectify that against the Waratahs this weekend.

Rebels Injuries & Team News

Ross Haylett-Petty will miss this match after being sent off last time out. Other than that the Rebels have a full squad to pick from.

Ideally the Rebels would want to give key players a rest but this is a must-win match now. They also need a bonus point to stay in touch with the top two.

The versatile Frank Lomani will certainly be hoping for a start in the backline after impressing off the bench last weekend.

Waratahs Form

The Waratahs have had a shocking start to their Super Rugby AU campaign with three defeats from three matches. It is not just the defeats that hurt, it is the margins.

They went down 41-7 on the opening weekend to the Reds before being thrashed 61-10 to the Brumbies in their following match.

The Waratahs showed some improvement in their third match but still lost 20-16 at home to the Western Force.

Over the course of their three matches, the Tahs’ have conceded 16 tries while only scoring three of their own. The defence will be a major concern again this weekend.

Waratahs Injuries & Team News

The Waratahs will continue to shake their team up weekly as they search for the right combinations.

Hooker Tom Horton could start ahead of Dave Porecki despite the latter scoring the Tahs’ only try in their last match. Alefosio Tatola and Chris Talakai are another two who could start in the front-row.
