Hugo Broos Questions Pitso Mosimane - Ernst Middendorp Jumps to His Defence
Hugo Broos, outgoing Bafana Bafana coach, has voiced concerns that appointing Pitso Mosimane could reverse South Africa's football progress, citing broader structural issues and agent influences. Ernst Middendorp, however, has defended Mosimane, stating that while structural criticism is fair, Broos should avoid public comments that undermine his successor. The focus, Middendorp insists, should be on judging Mosimane by his results, not pre-emptive concerns. The exchange underscores ongoing debates about leadership, structures, and the future direction of South African football.

Hugo Broos has raised concerns over Pitso Mosimane potentially taking over as the next Bafana Bafana head coach, suggesting that his appointment could set South African football back. Ernst Middendorp has hit back at the Belgian coach.
Broos Hits Out at Mosimane
Hugo Broos, who recently ended his tenure as national team coach, questioned the direction of the team under Mosimane and warned that South Africa could go “five years backwards” if the former coach returns.
The Belgian also pointed to concerns about the influence of agents and the structures surrounding the national team.
“When agents contacted me, my response was essentially that I did not deal with them.”
Broos has maintained that his concerns are not simply about Mosimane as an individual, but about protecting the structures and principles that he believes have contributed to Bafana’s recent progress.
However, his comments have not gone down well with German coach Ernst Middendorp, who believes Broos has gone too far in publicly questioning the man who could replace him.
Middendorp Jumps to Jingles' Defence
Middendorp has defended Mosimane, arguing that Broos should be allowed to highlight structural concerns without publicly undermining his potential successor.
The German coach believes there is a clear difference between warning about problems within South African football and making a direct assessment of Mosimane before he has even taken charge.
“Broos deserves considerable respect for what he has achieved. But leaving successfully also involves knowing when the team is no longer yours. You can protect principles and warn about structural problems without publicly undermining the person who may sit in your chair next!”
Middendorp also feels Broos' comments could place unnecessary pressure on Mosimane before his first training session or match.
The debate comes as Mosimane prepares for a return to the Bafana hot seat, with the former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly coach facing the challenge of building on the foundations laid during Broos' successful spell in charge.
While Broos' concerns about the broader footballing structures may remain relevant, Middendorp's message is clear: Mosimane should be judged on what he achieves once he gets the opportunity to lead Bafana.
