English Championship Predictions - 20 January 2026, Matchday 28

In Matchday 28 of the English Championship, Ipswich Town is expected to secure another victory as they aim to consolidate their position. Bristol City's inconsistent form makes it difficult for them to challenge Ipswich. Birmingham City is likely to claim an easy win against struggling Sheffield Wednesday, ensuring a clean sheet. Hull City shows strong form, poised to nab a crucial three points against a shaky Preston North End. Wrexham's defense is predicted to shine against Leicester, bolstering their playoff ambitions with a low-scoring victory.

English Championship Predictions - Matchday 28


Ipswich vs Bristol City


Ipswich are jostling for second spot while also chasing off a pack of chasing clubs. Bristol are just seven points behind them and one win away from a playoff spot, but form is not on their side.

Ipswich have won four on the bounce and have just one defeat in their last 10 matches, with seven wins. True title-winning form. Bristol have lost four of their last 10 games, winning just four, so I can’t see the visitors taking points off Ipswich.

Sheffield Wed vs Birmingham


The clock keeps ticking on Wednesday in what is a nightmare season as they are still on minus-7 points because of the penalty imposed on them. Three defeats on the bounce. No wins in 21 games - and add in 14 defeats - has left them as proverbial whipping boys.

Birmingham have two wins and a draw in their last three games and are stuck mid-table, but they’re sure to pick up three points as they know it’s a must-win game if they hope to stay well clear of the drop zone. Sheffield haven’t scored in their last five games and have been goalless in five of their last seven home games, so I’m backing a clean sheet for Birmingham.

Preston vs Hull


This has the makings of a classic clash, with both sides in the top six and angling for a top two finish. Hull have the better recent record, winning six of their last eight games, with one draw and one loss.

Preston have won just three of their last 10 and, more telling, they have lost three of their last five. Hull are also travelling well, winning four and drawing one of their last five games. Preston’s home form is poor, losing three and winning just one of their last seven games, including the last two in a row, so Hull have my vote to pick up three key points.

Wrexham vs Leicester


Wrexham can sniff the playoffs with a run of wins, but Leicester would draw level with Wrexham with a win. Leicester have lost four of their last seven matches, while Wrexham were on a five-match winning streak before losing 2-1 at home to Norwich midweek.

Leading up to that loss to Wrexham had won six and drawn two since their previous defeat. As for Ipswich, their form on the road isn’t strong as they’ve lost six, drawn one and won three of their last 10 away matches, averaging just over one goal per match, so I’m backing Wrexham’s defence to do a number on their visitors. 

Verdict

Ipswich to keep on winning, while Sheffield Wednesday to go goalless against Birmingham.

Hull to nab a key win away to Preston, while Wrexham to keep their playoff hopes alive with a low-scoring win over Leicester.
