Head to Head

These sides have met 92 in history with 25 draws, 36 West Ham victories and 31 Sunderland wins.

Sunderland Form

Sunderland won promotion to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs last season. The Black Cats came back from a goal down to defeat Sheffield United 2-1 in the final.

Regis Le Bris’ team started pre-season with a 4-0 win over non-league South Shields before a five-match winless run. Sunderland drew 1-1 against Sevilla, lost four in a row and ended that streak with a 1-0 triumph against Augsburg.

The Wearside outfit couldn’t build momentum and lost 3-0 at home against Rayo Vallecano. The Black Cats were 1-0 down after 18 minutes and conceded two second-half goals without reply.

West Ham Form

West Ham have found a decent rhythm under Graham Potter and are unbeaten in seven of their last nine matches.

The Hammers ended last season with a 3-1 Premier League win over Ipswich and beat Gasshoppers 3-1 in pre-season. A 2-1 Premier League Summer Series loss to Man United followed before West Ham beat Everton 2-1 and Bournemouth 2-0.

Potter’s side bounced back from a goal down and drew 1-1 at home against Lille on Saturday. The London outfit conceded on the stroke of half time and Niclas Fullkrug levelled with three minutes left.

Verdict

Sunderland looked underprepared for Premier League football in pre-season. In-form West Ham can pounce and seal all three points at the Stadium of Light.
