The Netherlands struggled against Poland in their Euro 2024 opening match, conceding an early goal. They fought back in the first half with Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo finding the net. Wout Weghorst emerged as the hero for Oranje, scoring a late winner just two minutes after being substituted in for ineffective Memphis Depay.

Oranje earned their ticket to Euro 2024 by finishing second in Group B with 18 points from eight matches (six wins, two defeats). Their only losses came against France, while they secured victories over Greece, the Republic of Ireland, and Gibraltar twice.

Ronald Koeman’s side was also victorious in both of their June international friendlies. They started with a 4-0 win against Canada, with Memphis Depay, Jeremie Frimpong, Wout Weghorst, and Virgil van Dijk all scoring. They then defeated Iceland 4-0, with goals from Van Dijk, Weghorst, Xavi Simons, and Donyell Malen.

France’s last warm-up clash ahead of Euro 2024 was a disappointment, failing to beat Canada at home last week (0-0) despite having 1.27-0.40 expected goals and 13-8 shots. Earlier in June, they cruised past Luxembourg 3-0 with Randal Kolo Muani, Jonathan Clauss and Kylian Mbappe on target.

Les Bleus were one of the most dominant teams in the qualifiers, starting the campaign with seven consecutive victories before being stopped on the final day by Greece (2-2 draw in Athens). They topped the group with 22 points ahead of Netherlands, Greece, Republic of Ireland and Gibraltar.
