Spain vs Italy Predictions

Spain began their tournament with a brilliant performance and while Italy also won, they were less convincing. Pre-tournament form for the Azzuri was also not great, so I fancy a Spain in.

Head to Head

In 40 previous encounters, Spain have won 15, Italy 12 and 13 draws.

Spain Form

Spain made a winning start to Euro 2024 as they outclassed Croatia 3-0 in the opening match at Olympiastadion in Berlin, scoring all three goals in the first half.

The first two goals were scored in the space of four minutes as Alvaro Morata and Fabain Ruiz found the net, while the job was finished by Real Madrid’s Dani Carvajal, scoring his first goal for the national team.

Luis de la Fuente’s side headed into Euro 2024 with high confidence after earning two convincing victories in friendly matches earlier this month.

The Red Fury had zero troubles against minnows Andorra 5-0, while even better performance was seen three days after against Northern Ireland 5-1. Mikel Oyarzabal scoring four goals in those encounters, Pedri bagging two.

Spain were one of the most successful teams in the EURO 2024 qualifiers, topping their group with 21 points (seven wins, one loss) ahead of Scotland, Norway, Georgia and Cyprus, scoring 25 and allowing just five goals.

Italy Form

Italy began their Euro title defense with a narrow 2-1 victory against Albania. Their opponents drew first blood with Nedim Bajrami scoring after just 22 seconds of play, but Azzurri bounced back quickly with goals from Alessandro Bastoni and Nicolo Barella.

It was a well-deserved victory with 1.67-0.38 expected goals, 66% possession and 16-8 shots for Luciano Spaletti’s side.

Gli Azzurri failed to impress in their last two test matches ahead of the tournament. Against Turkey, they ended in a 0-0 draw with 0.67-0.68 expected goals, 55% possession, and 11-10 shots. In the match against minnows Bosnia, they narrowly won 1-0, with Davide Frattesi scoring the only goal.

Italy qualified for EURO 2024 as the 2nd placed team from Group C, winning just four of their eight games. They finished behind England, ahead of Ukraine, North Macedonia, and Malta.

Italy Squad

Goalkeepers: Gianluigi Donnarumma (captain), Alex Meret, Guglielmo Vicario

Verdict

Spain left a strong impression by crushing Croatia, and they have a great record against Italy in the last few years, with three wins in four games. I will back the Red Fury to keep winning at the Euros, with Morata on the scoresheet.
