Egypt cruised to World Cup qualification and while not at their best when compared to a few years ago, they remain a very strong side, particularly on home soil.

At the last edition of AFCON, earlier this year, Egypt managed a fourth place finish, impressive given their chances going into the tournament. Resillience is part of Egyptian football and they showed that with a draw against Spain recently.

Their home form remains particularly impressive, with the Pharaohs unbeaten in nine straight matches on home soil, claiming eight wins in that run. Egypt head into this clash riding a five-game winning streak in Cairo and will be looking to at least extend their unbeaten status.

Russia Form

Russia was banned from competition so they will not feature at the World Cup, as they didn't feature in qualifying.

They have won five of their last 10 matches, but four of those victories were against teams below them in the FIFA Men’s Ranking. Russia, however, have slowed down a bit, with just one win and two draws in their last four fixtures, including a goalless stalemate against Mali in March.

Hamdy Fathy, who was sent off against Spain, is expected to retain his place in the side. Nantes forward Mostafa Mohamed will miss the clash after being left out of Egypt’s World Cup squad, while Mohamed Salah could be rested following Liverpool’s weekend fixture, opening the door for Mahmoud Trezeguet to start.

Russia could stick with the same starting XI that played out a goalless draw against Mali in March, with no injury concerns reported ahead of this clash.
