Mamelodi Sundowns have dominated South African football for close to a decade now. They are favourites again this season and given their form, should start strongly on Saturday. I’m backing the defending champs to win to nil.

Chippa United had a solid 2024/25 PSL season, finishing 12th, four points clear of the relegation zone. They managed eight wins, 10 draws and 12 defeats in their 28 league games.

However, towards the end of the season, Chippa ran out of steam, failing to win any of their last five matches. They lost three and drew two.

This season, the Chilli Boys will be hopeful of once again avoiding the drop, perhaps a bit more comfortably. The best way to do that will be a good start against the defending champions.

Sammy Seabi and Goodman Mosele have returned to Chippa United to add some experience into their midfield. Striker Bienvenu Eva Nga has been released.

Thabo Makhele has been released in defence. Khaya Mfecane will boost the midfield after his arrival from Cape Town Spurs.

Mamelodi Sundowns Form

Mamelodi Sundowns won the PSL title last season for the eighth consecutive year. They are clear favourites for a ninth title this season.

Coming into this season, Sundowns look in great form. While they failed to progress from the group stage of the FIFA World Club Cup in June, they did impress many with their performances, particularly in their 4-3 defeat to Dortmund.

Last week, Sundowns began their domestic season with a 4-0 home thrashing of Richards Bay in the MTN8 Cup. Iqraam Rayners scored a brace while Siyabonga Mabena added a goal 15 minutes from time after an own goal late in the 2nd half.

Right back Khuliso Mudau and forwards Peter Shalulile and Lucas Ribeiro are set to miss out. The trio are being linked with exits.
