The Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates rivalry, known as the Soweto Derby, is one of the most significant fixtures in South African football. Both clubs have a rich history and a passionate following.

Orlando Pirates were founded in 1937 whilst Kaizer Chiefs were formed in 1970 by former Orlando Pirates player Kaizer Motaung.

The first-ever meeting between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates took place on January 24, 1970. The match ended in a 1-1 draw. The venue for this historic encounter was Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg.

Soweto Derby Notable Players

Orlando Pirates striker Jerry Sikhosana scored plenty of goals for Bucs 1990s, including a hat-trick in a derby match.

Ace Ntsoelengoe is Chiefs’ all-time leading scorer in the derby with 19 goals. Ntsoelengoe impressively netted in three Soweto Derbies in a row in 1975, which was later matched by Jerry Sikhosana (1996) and Dennis Lota (1999-2000) in a Pirates shirt. 

Kaizer Motaung scored eight goals against Kaizer Chiefs for Pirates, whilst Siphiwe Tshabalala scored both home and away against Bucs in the 2011-2012 season.

Centre back Daniel Cardoso and striker Leonardo Castro both scored four goals in the fixture in the PSL era.

Who Has Made the Most Derby Appearances

During the PSL era, five players have made the most appearances in Soweto derbies: Happy Jele leads with 33 matches, followed by Simphiwe Tshabalala with 31. 

The other players include Bernard Parker, Willard Katsande, and Itumeleng Khune.
