Southampton vs Ipswich Championship Round 40 Predictions - Southampton to keep their automatic promotion hopes alive

Last updated: 1 hour ago

Southampton, riding high on a strong form that includes defeating Arsenal, are set to face Ipswich in an important fixture. With Southampton having scored 22 goals in their last 10 matches and remaining undefeated in their last 17 Championship games, they are strong contenders. Conversely, Ipswich, although they have managed 25 goals in their last 15 matches, have struggled recently with five draws in their last 10 games. Southampton is predicted to win this encounter, with the potential for both teams to score.

Southampton vs Ipswich Predictions

Southampton are on a great run of form which included beating Arsenal to earn a spot in the FA Cup semi-final against Man City. Ipswich have been struggling to put wins together after a strong start to their season and they look ripe for the taking, with three teams challenging them for the prized second place automatic promotion spot.

  • Southampton have scored 22 goals in their last 10 matches.
  • Southampton are undefeated in their last 17 Championship matches.
  • Southampton have won 16 and drawn four of their last 21 games.
  • Ipswich have failed to score in 2 of their last 4 matches.
  • Ipswich have scored 25 goals in their last 15 matches.
  • Ipswich have kept 6 clean sheets in their last 13 matches.

Head-to-Head

The sides have drawn two of their last three meetings, with Southampton winning the other match. Ipswich won the two previous clashes between the two sides.

Southampton Form

Southampton’s eight-match winning streak ended with a 2-2 draw with Bristol City in the Championship before losing 2-1 to Man City in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.

Southampton took the lead against City thanks to a stunning curled goal into the top corner of the goal from Finn Azaz. Their dreams of their first FA Cup win in 50 years ended after two brilliant goals from City. Prior to that match the Saints had scored two or more goals in each of their last seven matches.

Southampton have also scored in each of their last 23 matches in all competitions.

Ipswich Form

Ipswich stuttered to a goalless draw at West Bromwich on Saturday as the Tractor Boys racked up five draws and just four wins in their last 10 matches.

They are ahead of third-placed Millwall on goal difference as the two vie for the second automatic promotion spot. Middlesbrough are just one point behind the pair but have just one match left to play. Southampton are guaranteed a spot in the playoffs but have two matches to play and could pip all three teams above them to that prized second spot if results go their way.

Southampton vs Ipswich Team News & Squads

Southampton will be without the suspended Flynn Downes, while Jack Stephens is still on the injury list. Ipswich will probably be without Leif Davis who has to pass a fitness test after recovering from injury, while Conor Townsend and Ashley Young are still recovering from their injuries.

Southampton (possible XI): Peretz; Bree, Harwood-Bellis, Wood, Manning; Downes, Charles; Matsuki, Azaz, Scienza; Larin.

Ipswich Town (possible XI): Walton; Furlong, O'Shea, Kipre, Greaves; Matusiwa, Taylor; Philogene, Nunez, Clarke; Hirst.

Verdict

I am backing Southampton to win with both sides to score.
