Athletic Bilbao vs Osasuna - Matchday 33


A place in Europe is still on the radar for both sides, but Bilbao are struggling to pull wins together. The hosts have lost 5 of their last 6 matches, failing to score in 4 of those matches. Osasuna have lost just 2 of their last 12 matches, with 5 wins and 5 draws in the bag, so they’re in good form but not dominating in La Liga.

Osasuna haven’t been travelling well, losing 2 of their last 4 on the road and with only 3 wins in their last 10 away matches. Bilbao have lost 5 and won just 3 of their last 10 matches at home, so this is stacking up as a scrappy draw.

Mallorca vs Valencia


Valencia are just 1 point ahead of Mallorca and both sides are nervously looking over their shoulder as they can both be caught by a single victory by the teams below them. Valencia have been struggling and have lost 3 of their last 4 matches, while Mallorca have won 3 of their last 4 but have won their last 3 on the bounce at home. This looks like a strong home win in my book.

Girona vs Betis


Betis are fighting to hold onto 5th place and a spot in next season’s Europa League, while Girona’s season is largely done and dusted in mid-table. Betis aren’t looking strong despite their La Liga placing, as they have just 1 win in their last 10 matches. 

Girona have lost just 1 of their last 5 matches, conceding just 3 goals and earning a magnificent 1-1 draw away to Real Madrid in their last match. With Girona winning 3 of their last 4 home matches and Betis being winless in their last 5 on the road, this looks like a clear win for the home side.

Real Madrid vs Alaves


Real Madrid are 9 points above 3rd-place Villareal and 9 points behind log-leaders Barcelona, and after a good winning run in La Liga they have just 1 point from their last 2 matches. Alaves are 1 point above the relegation zone and will be motivated to get something out of this match.

Real lost home and away to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-final after a 5-match winning streak, and their last 4 matches have seen them lose 3 and draw 1 match. Alaves are unbeaten in 4 matches, although pulling in just 1 win from that stretch of matches.

The romantic in me is pulling for Alaves to down the mighty Real Madrid to take advantage of their minor late-season blip, but Real are such a force to be reckoned with and they are likely to punish Alaves as a way of pulling themselves back onto the winning track. Still, with Alaves pushing to save their skins and Real in poor form it makes sense to back a goal glut, which would align with any of the possible 3 match results. 

Verdict

Athletic Bilbao and Osasuna to end with honours even, while it's wins for Mallorca and Girona. There are so many unknowns in the Real Madrid-Alaves clash that the wise money is backing a glut of goals.
