Champions League Predictions, Round 7

With two matches left in the group stage it’s down to serious business for all the teams as they push for places in the playoffs.

Olympiacos Piraeus vs Bayer Leverkusen

The home side have plenty to do to qualify for the playoffs, while Leverkusen are close to being secure of their spot in the next round. Olympiacos have lost three and drawn one of their last five games in the tournament, while Leverkusen are W2 D2 L1.

Olympiacos have a great record domestically but have struggled to beat stronger opposition in the Champions League, winning just one of their six matches. Mind you, they toughed out a 3-4 defeat at home to Real Madrid and held PSV to a 1-1 draw at home, so they are no pushovers. Leverkusen are a strong unit but having lost their last two games on the bounce - and given Olympiacos’ strong home form - this sounds worthy of taking a punt on a draw.

FC Copenhagen vs Napoli

Napoli (23rd) and Copenhagen (24th) are sitting in the last playoff places, just one point above a string of sides desperate to stay in the competition. They will likely both need at least one win to go through to the knockout stages.

Both sides have been in good form, Copenhagen winning five and drawing two of their last 10 matches, while Napoli have won five and drawn three of their last eight. Copenhagen are strong at home and their games are usually full of goals, with both sides scoring (and conceding) freely in recent months. Hard to call the winner, but all things considered this should be a goal-heavy clash.

Villarreal vs Ajax

Either side can sneak through to the playoffs mathematically, but Ajax are better placed with three points compared to Villareal’s sole point from their six matches. Villareal have lost their last four in a row and have just one draw this season, so the momentum is with Ajax, who won their last match in the Champions League.

In all competitions Villareal have lost four and won two of their last six games, while Ajax have won seven  of their last 10, with just one defeat. Villareal should hold nothing back, so it could be a thrilling match, but it has an Ajax win written all over it.

Sporting CP vs PSG

Both sides are enjoying a good run of form domestically and in Europe. PSG are 3rd in the table with just one defeat in six matches and are looking like a tough proposition, with a goal difference of 19:8. Sporting are well placed in 14th spot but have only won half of their games.

Sporting are a tough proposition at home, losing just two of their last 15 home games. They have also won their last three Champions League games, which were all at home. As for PSG, in their last three Champions League matches they’ve beaten Barcelona (2-1) and Bayer Leverkusen (7-2) on the road in the Champions League, along with a 0-0 away draw to Atheltico Bilbao. However, PSG are just such a quality side and so clinical that I have to back them, even away from home.

Verdict

Leverkusen to have a hard night out in Greece, while Copenhagen vs Napoli looks too close to call.

Villarreal to go down at home to Ajax, while PSG to see off Sporting away from home.
