Champions League Predictions

Chelsea vs Benfica

Chelsea have lost three of their last four matches, including their Champions League opener against Bayern Munich. The loss of Cole Palmer for a couple of weeks is a big blow, especially in Europe. Benfica travel well in Europe and are quick on the counter, but their set-piece defending has wobbled. My call is that Chelsea will use their home ground advantage and cautious tactics to pull off a win in a low-chance game.

Prediction: Chelsea by one.

Best bet: Under 2.5 goals.

Result odds: Chelsea 1.62 | Draw 4.00 | Benfica 4.75.

Atlético Madrid vs Frankfurt

Atlético’s press-and-punish blueprint under Simeone usually translates at home, with them winning their last three home matches including a 5-2 thumping of Real Madrid. Julian Alvarez and Antoine Griezmann should torment a Frankfurt side that can be careless playing out. The Germans carry the punch on transitions but may struggle for territory.

Prediction: Atlético to win to nil.

Best bet: Atlético -0.5 handicap.

Odds range: Atlético 1.55 | Draw 4.33 | Frankfurt 5.00.

Galatasaray vs Liverpool

Liverpool have won 13 of their last 14 games in Champions League group matches and are in great form in the EPL, although they lost their first match of the season against Crystal Palace on the weekend. Virgil van Dijk should be key for Liverpool all over the park. Gala have lost 12 of their last 18 Champions League matches and haven’t lost at home since 2018. They will be hoping German general Gundogan can work some magic, as he did against Frankfurt, where he set up four chances on his UCL debut for Gala.

Prediction: Draw or Liverpool by one.

Best bet: Both teams to score.

Kairat Almaty vs Real Madrid

A long trip to Kazakhstan plus unfamiliar altitude and surface could slow Madrid early, but their individual quality in transition should create boundless moments for Mbappé to bury the ball. The Madrid goal machine has scored 12 goals in his last 10 matches, netting in all but one of those matches. Expect patient control, then late separation from Almaty, who are dogged in defence and could frustrate Madrid, but once the floodgates open they will have little resistance to offer.

Prediction: Real Madrid by three.
