Champions League Predictions, Round 1


Club Brugge vs Aston Villa


Club Brugge have three wins in four matches, with three clean sheets and are riding high in the Jupiler Pro League. Villa have lost four of their last five matches and have been goalless in their last three matches. They have netted just twice in five matches and, with Brugge’s defensive strength and home advantage it looks a solid bet to back a home win to nil.

Porto vs Manchester City


The two sides have met just four times, first in 2012 and then 2020, with City winning three and drawing the other match. Porto have won all six of their competitive matches this season, keeping five clean sheets, but they haven’t faced a side of City’s calibre this season. They are likely to go down but I don’t see many goals in this game.

City’s defence is far from watertight, conceding a goal in each of their opening three Premier League matches. The Citizens have won their opening three matches and are looking sharp with some major midfield and attacking talent, so they should have this in the bag.

Real Madrid vs Inter


Inter have 11 goals in their last five matches, while Real Madrid have netted 13 times. Inter have won their last five matches on the bounce, conceding just four goals. They had a great 3-2 win over Napoli on the weekend and will be up for the challenge of taking on a strong Real Madrid side. 

Real have conceded just three goals in five matches, although they suffered a 1-0 defeat away to Betis on the weekend, but they are almost unbeatable at home, and with 3-2-4-4 goals in their four matches prior to their away defeat I sense goals will flow in a Real Madrid win.

Lille vs Betis


Lille are unbeaten in five matches but have secured just two wins, both with a clean sheet. Betis have three wins in five, all with clean sheets, but have lost twice, the most recent just eight days ago when they went down 5-2 away to Levante.

This looks like a low-scoring draw between two tight defences that are both lacking firepower upfront.

Verdict

I’m backing a win for Club Brugge and a draw between Lille and Betis. Goals to be in short supply between Porto and Manchester City but plentiful as Real Madrid are lined up for a win over Inter.
