Champions League Predictions, Round 1


Barcelona vs Feyenoord


Barcelona have won all four of their La Liga matches, keeping three clean sheets and winning two of those matches 5–0. They have won their last nine home games so they are firm favourites for the home win. Feyenoord have won three and drawn two of their last five matches and have netted 12 times, so we should be in for plenty of goals.

Stuttgart vs Viking


Stuttgart took a 5-1 away hammering from Bayern Munich 12 days ago but beat FC Koln 4-1 at home on the weekend. They also beat Hansa Rostock 4-0 away in the German Cup and are unbeaten in seven matches at home, winning five. 

Viking have just one win in four outings on the road and while they have won six and drawn two of their last 10 matches, the Norway league is not a good preparation for Champions League competition. They did beat Dinamo Zagreb 5-3 on aggregate in the Champions League qualifier mid-August, but they are unlikely to trouble Stuttgart away from home. 

Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid


Liverpool are unbeaten in five matches, drawing three and winning two with three clean sheets. They’ve scored two goals in each of their last four matches and now that they’re hitting form I’m backing them for the win. 

Atletico had won three and drawn one in four matches, scoring nine goals to four but went down 3-0 in their last match away to Atletico Bilbao. I’m backing them to score in the away defeat.

Sporting CP vs Galatasaray


Both sides are in good form, Sporting with four wins on the bounce and Galatasaray with three. Both sides are averaging three goals per game over their last four matches but have also been conceding. 

Galatasaray have 12 goals in their last three matches on the road while Sporting have 12 games in their last four matches, so this should be a goal feast.

Verdict

Wins for Barcelona, Stuttgart, Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid, while there should be goals between Sporting CP and Galatasaray.
