Niko Kovac’s side showed character at the weekend, recovering from 2-0 down to beat Hoffenheim 3-2, and they have won three of their last four competitive home matches. 

Dortmund also thrashed Villarreal 4-0 at Signal Iduna Park last season. Injuries and suspensions are a concern, however, with Nico Schlotterbeck, Emre Can, Giannis Konstantelias and Ramy Bensebaini unavailable, while Filippo Mane remains doubtful.

After being held to two 2-2 draws in their opening two matches in La Liga, Villareal suffered back-to-back defeats as they were dragged down towards the bottom of the table after just four matches.

Villarreal travel to Germany still searching for their first victory of the season after opening with two draws followed by consecutive defeats. Their latest setback was a 3-2 home loss to Deportivo La Coruna despite taking the lead, leaving Inigo Perez’s side short of confidence ahead of a demanding Champions League opener. 

Villarreal also have difficult league-phase fixtures against Napoli, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain to come, increasing the importance of a positive start. Their only previous competitive meeting with Dortmund ended in a 4-0 defeat last season. Juan Foyth and Carlos Romero remain injury doubts for Tuesday’s clash.
