Europa League Predictions, Matchday 5

Bologna vs Salzburg

Bologna look seriously solid right now – unbeaten in five in all competitions with three wins, two draws, eight goals scored and just one conceded in that stretch, plus a useful Europa run that has them on five points from four group games.

Salzburg are top of the Austrian Bundesliga but their European form is wobblier, with just one win and three defeats so far in the league phase and a 3-2 loss to Tirol in their latest outing hinting at defensive frailty. With Bologna keeping clean sheets for fun at home and Salzburg tending to play open, attacking football, the Italians look the likelier side to grind out a result – maybe with a late winner rather than a rout.

Rangers vs Braga

Rangers have picked up in the league with three wins from their last five domestic games, including back-to-back victories over Dundee and Livingston, but their Europa League campaign has been grim reading: four straight defeats in the league phase, with six goals conceded and none scored, leaves them bottom of the standings.

Fifth-placed Braga, by contrast, are free-scoring – 4-2 over Nacional, 2-1 against Moreirense and 4-0 vs Casa Pia in recent weeks – and have taken nine points from four Europa games, beating Celtic, Red Star and Feyenoord before that wild 4-3 loss to Genk. On balance, Braga look the calmer, more confident European outfit right now, so the safer call may be the Portuguese side to avoid defeat, even if I’d still expect Rangers to throw everything at them at Ibrox.

Nottingham Forest vs Malmo

Forest’s season has finally sparked into life: they’re still only 16th in the Premier League, but a run of two wins and two draws in their last four – including that eye-catching 3-0 win away at Liverpool and a 2-0 home victory over Porto in Europe – suggests Sean Dyche has tightened things up nicely.

Malmo sit in 6th place in Sweden and come in with just one win from their last five matches, plus a Europa record of zero wins, one draw and three defeats from the league phase, shipping five more goals than they’ve scored. Given Forest’s upswing in form and Malmo’s struggles on the continental stage, this feels like a game the English side should control – anything less than a home win would be a disappointment.

Maccabi Tel Aviv vs Lyon

Maccabi are second in the Israeli Premier League with seven wins and just one defeat from 10, but the recent picture is much messier. Maccabbi suffered a 2-6 home hammering by Beitar Jerusalem and Europa League losses to Dinamo Zagreb, Midtjylland and Aston Villa leave them with a single point and a minus-7 goal difference from four league-phase games.

Lyon arrive 7th in Ligue 1 and have been more dependable in Europe, taking nine points from four Europa fixtures – including wins over Salzburg and Basel – even if domestic form has stuttered with draws against Auxerre and Brest and defeats to PSG and Betis. With Maccabi’s back four suddenly leaky and Lyon carrying more all-round quality, this has the feel of a lively, end-to-end encounter where the French side are just about the smarter side to side with.

Verdict

Bologna to pull off a late win over Salzburg, while Braga to win away to Rangers.

Nottingham Forest to beat out struggling Malmo, and Lyon to pick up entertaining away win.
