Europa League Predictions - Round 4

Editor
Last updated: 40 minutes ago

The Europa League fixtures on 5 November feature four main tips: Besiktas and Juventus are predicted to secure away wins, Benfica are tipped to win to nil against Lech Poznan, and over 3.5 match goals is selected for Bayer Leverkusen v Marseille. Leverkusen's three European clean sheets contrast with Marseille's improved Ligue 1 attack, while Celtic's defensive issues support Besiktas despite the home advantage. Juventus face AZ Alkmaar's formidable unbeaten European home record, and Benfica's strong home form is favoured, though Lech's domestic scoring run is a risk to the clean-sheet tip.

  • Leverkusen and Marseille bring contrasting form to a potentially high-scoring clash.
  • Besiktas aim to prolong Celtic's wait for a first point in the league phase.
  • Juventus face an AZ side that boasts a formidable European home record.
  • Benfica are looking to make it four European wins from four against Lech Poznan.

Europa League Predictions - Round 4

Bayer Leverkusen vs Marseille

Leverkusen have won all three league-phase fixtures this season without conceding a goal: they beat Celje, Lech Poznan and OFI by a combined 8-0 scoreline. Their domestic picture is messier, with 3-0 and 4-2 Bundesliga defeats to Hoffenheim and Stuttgart bracketed a 5-2 German Cup victory. Patrik Schick remains a central scoring threat for the hosts.

Marseille have lost all three of their European games but have won four on the bounce in Ligue 1, most recently a 2-0 win over Toulouse and a 4-3 victory against Le Havre. Bayer have my backing but Marseille's attack will pose a threat to the hosts, so I'm backing a goal fest.

Celtic vs Besiktas

Celtic were beaten 2-0 by Falkirk on Sunday on the back of a 2-2 draw with Dundee United. Their three Europa League matches this season have seen them score just three times while shipping nine goals in losing all three matches.

Besiktas have seven European points after beating Marseille 4-1 and Hoffenheim 3-2, while adding a 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace. Their domestic results have been mixed as they drew 2-2 at Kasimpasa after picking up a 2-0 win over Basaksehir. Home ground advantage is unlikely to lift the hosts enough judging by their recent form.

AZ Alkmaar vs Juventus

AZ hammered Ararat-Armenia 4-0 thanks to two strikes by Weslley Patati, but domestic defeats to Twente and Ajax have exposed their inconsistency. Their European record at home is exceptional as they have gone 17 matches unbeaten, winning 14 times and drawing the other three matches.

Juventus arrive on the back of 2-0 victories over Napoli and Lecce but they have also recently lost 2-0 to Genoa. Juve are unbeaten in the Europa League this season but AZ's home resilience poses a major obstacle to the visitors. I'm backing Juventus to upset AZ's apple cart with their attacking depth and strong European form.

Benfica vs Lech Poznan

Benfica top the Europa League table after a great start to their campaign that has seen them beat Milan 2-0, Celtic 4-1 and Omonia 4-1. They have also defeated Santa Clara and Alverca in their last two league outings, with prolific striker Vangelis Pavlidis scoring again against Alverca. They have won nine of their last 10 matches in all competitions, so they are hot to trot.

Lech are recovering domestically through wins over Wisla Krakow (3-1) and Legia Warsaw (2-1), but they have taken only one point from their three European fixtures this season. Lech have conceded nine league-phase goals, shipping four goals without reply against Crystal Palace and Leverkusen. Benfica's ability to control matches at home has the red flags flapping furiously for a clean-sheet win.

Verdict

I'm backing wins for Besiktas and Juventus, a win to nil for Benfica and four or more goals between Bayer Leverkusen and Marseille.
