New Zealand vs India 1st ODI Predictions - Seifert to score big as New Zealand take series lead

Editor
Last updated: 10 minutes ago

New Zealand are tipped to win the upcoming ODI against India, based on their home advantage and recent back-to-back ODI victories over the visitors. Glenn Phillips, who has been in outstanding form, and Virat Kohli are highlighted as the likely standout batters in this fixture. While India possess a strong batting line-up on paper, New Zealand’s momentum from the T20I series and familiarity with home conditions provide the basis for this selection. Both squads feature several in-form players, but the tip favours the hosts.

New Zealand vs India Predictions

The five-match T20I series produced a compelling finish with New Zealand picking up back-to-back consolation wins to end the series on a high despite going down 3-2. The Black Caps won their last two ODIs against India back in January.

  • New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips scored 341 runs (ave 113.66) in the T20I series.
  • New Zealand’s Tim Seifert scored 93 off 50 balls in the 5th T20I.
  • New Zealand’s Nathan Smith took 2/28 in the 5th T20I.
  • India’s Virat Kohli scored 65, 74, 139* & 29 in his last 5 innings.
  • India’s Shreyas Iyer hit 42, 22 & 50 in the 5-match series.
  • India’s Arshdeep Singh took 6 wickets in the T20I series vs New Zealand.
  • New Zealand won their last 2 ODIs against India.

Head-to-Head

India have won three of their last five ODIs against New Zealand but the hosts won the last two on the bounce earlier this year.

New Zealand form

New Zealand’s successful chase in Hamilton included a brilliant innings of 93 from Tim Seifert and an unbeaten 65 from in-form Glenn Phillips. Daryll Mitchell hit four sixes in his 16-ball 29 to power New Zealand to a seven-wicket win with two overs to spare.

Earlier Adam Milne (4/19) had starred with the ball backed up by Nathan Smith and Blair Tickner, who each picked up a pair of wickets as they limited India to a score of 191/8 off their 20 overs.

India Form

India retain quality throughout the batting order by bringing Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli into the longer format alongside skipper Shubman Gill, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer.

Abhishek Sharma was India’s top-scorer in the T20I series but won’t be part of the ODI contest. Shreyas Iyer brings good white-ball form into the series with scores of 42, 22 and 50 in the T20I series. Arshdeep Singh (six wickets) was once against India’s leading light with the ball.

Team News

New Zealand squad: Mitchell Santner (c), Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Matt Henry, Tim Seifert, Kyle Jamieson, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Nathan Smith, Blair Tickner and Will Young.

India squad: Shubman Gill (c), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Naman Dhir, Anshul Kamboj, Gurnoor Brar, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Arshdeep Singh, Ishan Kishan, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and Kuldeep Yadav.

Verdict

India have the stronger batting pedigree on paper and are backed by the bookies, but they have my vote for the win as they come into the clash with back-to-back wins in the T20I series and also won their last two ODIs against India. Glenn Phillips and Virat Kohli are my picks to star with the bat.
