Sydney Thunder vs Melbourne Renegades Predictions

The two teams are stuck at the foot of the table, with the Thunder already out of the running for the playoffs. The Renegades have three games to play with a good chance of making the playoffs, and with two wins in their last three games I fancy them to beat the Thunder, who have lost their last five games on the bounce.

  • Melbourne Renegades’ Josh Brown has scored 43, 84, 22 and 80 in his last 4 innings.
  • Melbourne Renegades’ Mohammad Rizwan has scored 41, 21 and 2 in his last 3 knocks.
  • Sydney Thunder’s David Warner scored 82 off 56 balls against the Heat.
  • Sydney Thunder’s Matthew Gilkes (218 runs, S/R 162.68) is 9th on the BBL runs list.

Head-to-Head

The Renegades have won just one and lost three of their last five Big Bash matches against Sydney Thunder. The other match was abandoned.

Sydney Thunder Form

The Thunder’s disastrous season saw them hit with a fifth defeat in a row when they lost to the Heat by seven wickets.

After a slow start to the season, David Warner exploded with runs, smashing 130*, 67* and 82 in his last three innings. Matthew Gilkes has scored 76, 24, 33 and 43 in his last six innings. The talented Sam Konstas hit 63 against the Heat but has scored just two 20s in the rest of his six innings this season.

Daniel Sams is joint 5th on the wickets list with 12 victims to his name, including figures of 4/51 against the Scorchers and 3/36 against the Hurricanes. Reece Topley took 3/41 against the Sixers and 2/34 against the Scorchers.

Melbourne Renegades Form

After winning two matches on the bounce, the Renegades lost their fourth match of the season when they went down to the Stars by eight wickets.

Josh Brown is fourth in the runs list, scoring 270 runs at a strike-rate of 163.63. Tim Seifert is the Renegades’ second top runscorer (190 runs) but he hasn’t scored above 26 in his last five knocks. Mohammad Rizwan has been chipping in with runs in the last three matches but his highest score this series is just 41.

Gurinder Sandhu is joint second on the wickets list with 14 wickets (ave 16.85). He took 4/41 and 4/28 in his side’s last two wins. Hassan Khan has been his side’s most economical bowler, taking 1/25, 2/26 and 1/20 in his last three matches (econ 7.95).

Sydney Thunder vs Melbourne Renegades Team News

The Thunder have lost Shadab Khan on international duty, the Pakistan leggie having kept things pretty tight during his six matches at the start of the season.

Fast bowler Nathan McAndrew has been left out of the Thunder’s last home game of the season after going for over 10 and 15 runs an over in his last two matches. Under-19 World Cup winner Charlie Anderson steps into McAndrew’s boots for what could be his Big Bash debut. Skipper David Warner picked up a knee injury during his 82 off 56 balls against the Heat and didn’t field when his side went out to defend their total. He is hoping to play in what could be his last home game in professional cricket.

Renegades spinner Adam Zampa has returned after recovering from a neck strain, with spin-bowling allrounder Matthew Spoors making way for the Aussie star. Paceman Tom Rogers has still not recovered from the shoulder surgery that has sidelined him for the entire season.

Sydney Thunder (squad): David Warner (c), Charlie Anderson, Wes Agar, Tom Andrews, Cameron Bancroft, Sam Billings, Chris Green, Matthew Gilkes, Ryan Hadley, Sam Konstas, Nic Maddinson, Daniel Sams, Tanveer Sangha, David Willey.

Melbourne Renegades (squad): Will Sutherland (c), Jason Behrendorff, Josh Brown, Harry Dixon, Brendan Doggett, Sam Elliott, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Caleb Jewell, Hassan Khan, Muhammad Rizwan, Gurinder Sandhu, Tim Seifert, Callum Stow, Adam Zampa.

Verdict
