England vs New Zealand 2nd Test Predictions - Revamped England still too strong for New Zealand

Editor
Last updated: 1 hour ago

England are predicted to beat New Zealand in the 2nd Test at The Oval after a tricky first Test pitch for batters. England's recent win, strong individual performances from Joe Root and Josh Tongue, and squad changes with new debutants give them the edge, despite absentees from injuries and breaches of protocol. New Zealand face challenges without Kane Williamson and due to their poor Test record at The Oval. Josh Tongue and Nathan Smith are tipped for impressive bowling, while Joe Root is backed to deliver with the bat.

  • England lead the series 1-0 after their huge win at Lord’s.
  • New Zealand have a strong side but confidence is low from heavy defeat.
  • The weather looks set to be hot and sunny with minor rain interruptions so the pitch should play true.

England vs New Zealand Predictions

The 1st Test pitch was a nightmare for batters but The Oval should present a far better surface for batters.

  • England’s Harry Brook has scored 40, 26 and 56 in his last 4 knocks.
  • England’s Joe Root has scored 111*, 96, 33, 64 & 44 in his last 7 innings.
  • England’s Josh Tongue has figures of 5/124, 4/89, 2/76, 3/40 & 2/48 in 6 innings.
  • New Zealand’s Tom Blundell has scored 98*, 96, 35, 25, 62 & 186 in his last 8 knocks.
  • New Zealand’s Devon Conway has scored 20, 30 & 41 in his last 5 innings.
  • New Zealand’s Nathan Smith has figures of 6/40, 2/53, 3/38 & 6/70 in his last 2 Tests.
  • New Zealand have won just 1 Test in 9 appearances at The Oval.

Head-to-Head

England have won three and lost two of their last five Tests against New Zealand, including a 115-run win in the 1st Test.

England Form

England lost the recent Ashes series 4-1, but they won the 4th Test in that series and - with their 1st Test win against New Zealand - they have now won two of their last three Tests.

Harry Brook was the only England batter to pass 20 in the 1st innings, going on to what proved an invaluable 56 off 71 balls in England’s first innings of 140. Emilio Gay scored a vital 57 off 95 balls in the 2nd innings on his Test debut, while fellow opener Ben Duckett scored 19 and 33 in what was a low-scoring Test.

Ollie Robinson and Gus Atkinson each took seven wickets in the 1st Test but both will be missing for the 2nd Test through injury and suspension. Josh Tongue put in a good shift at Lord’s to pick up 3/40 and 2/48.

New Zealand Form

After winning three Tests on the bounce against the West Indies and Ireland, New Zealand were brought back to earth with a bump when they suffered a 115-run defeat in the 1st Test.

New Zealand’s top six failed in the first innings, with numbers seven and nine (Glenn Phillips and Kyle Jamieson) scoring crucial 30s to lift New Zealand to 113 all out in response to England’s collapse for 140 in their first innings.

Phillips was again on form with the bat in the second knock, scoring 44* off 52 balls after Devon Conway (41) and Kane Williamson (18) had been the only two batters in New Zealand’s top seven to get into double figures.

Kyle Jamieson (5/62) starred in England’s 1st innings collapse and took 1/41 in the second dig. Nathan Smith ran through England’s batters in the second innings in picking up 6/70 after his first innings figures of 3/38.

Team news

England have been hit by bad news after a nightclub incident midweek which has seen Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson sidelined following a "breach of team protocol". Sonny Baker and Jordan Cox have been named in the likely side to make their Test debuts.

Jofra Archer has been brought back into the side to replace the injured Ollie Robinson, while James Rew is on standby to replace keeper Jamie Smith who is an injury concern. Rew would be England’s third debutant in the match if he is called upon to replace Smith.

New Zealand will be without legendary batter Kane Williamson who has retired after his double failure in the 1st Test at Lord’s. Henry Nicholls will take his place. Matt Henry is an injury concern (back spasm) but should be fit to take his place.

England (possible XI): Emilio Gay, Ben Duckett, Jacob Bethell, Joe Root (c), Harry Brook, Jamie Smith, Jordan Cox, Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue, Matt Fisher, Sonny Baker.

New Zealand (possible XI): Tom Latham (c), Devon Conway, Henry Nicholls, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Blundell, Glenn Phillips, Nathan Smith, Kyle Jamieson, Will O'Rourke, Matt Henry.

Verdict

England are tipped to win, with Josh Tongue, Joe Root and Nathan Smith backed to star with bat and ball.
