Head-to-Head

Welsh Fire have won three and lost two of their last five matches in The Hundred against the Manchester Super Giants. The Fire have won the last three of those matches.

Manchester Super Giants Form

Manchester Super Giants are under pressure after a worrying dip in form. Aiden Markram’s side began the season with back-to-back wins, but three straight defeats have left them needing a quick response. Their latest setback was a 45-run loss to MI London, where both the batting and bowling units struggled.

This is now a crucial fixture for their Top 3 hopes, and Markram will need a stronger all-round display from his players. Tim Seifert has yet to hit top form, making a good start from him and Markram important. Jos Buttler has carried much of the batting load with 226 runs this season and will again be key in the middle order alongside Heinrich Klaasen and Leus du Plooy.

Liam Dawson and Tom Moores offer late hitting power, but Manchester need more consistency across the line-up.

The bowling attack also has work to do after leaking runs in the last game. Gus Atkinson and Dawson must be sharper with the new ball, while Sonny Baker, their leading bowler with seven wickets, will be vital through the middle overs with Josh Tongue. Markram and Noor Ahmad will also need to provide control in support.

Welsh Fire Form

Welsh Fire have enjoyed an excellent campaign and now sit second on the table with four wins from five matches. Philip Salt’s side come into this game after a six-wicket win over Southern Brave, and another victory would move them closer to securing a place in the next round.

Salt and Matthew Short give Welsh Fire an aggressive opening pair, and the team will look to them for another strong platform. Rachin Ravindra has been consistent with 145 runs this season and will be important in the middle order alongside Joe Root and Jordan Cox.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Marco Jansen and Ben Kellaway add further power, giving Welsh Fire plenty of depth and finishing ability.

With the ball, Sam Cook has led the way with six wickets and will be expected to strike early alongside Chris Woakes. Lockie Ferguson and Jansen bring pace and experience through the middle overs, while Root, Short and Ravindra give Salt useful extra options. Welsh Fire look balanced, confident and well placed to keep their strong run going.

Team news

With cloud overhead the bowlers might have an advantage, so the Super Giants will hope to bowl first and restrict the Fire to a gettable score to take the pressure off their struggling top order.

Manchester Super Giants (possible XI): Aiden Markram (c), Tim Seifert, Jos Buttler, Heinrich Klaasen, Leus du Plooy, Tom Moores, Liam Dawson, Gus Atkinson, Noor Ahmad, Josh Tongue, Sonny Baker.

Welsh Fire (possible XI): Philip Salt (c), Matthew Short, Joe Root, Rachin Ravindra, Jordan Cox, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Ben Kellaway, Marco Jansen, Chris Woakes, Lockie Ferguson, Sam Cook.

Verdict

Manchester Super Giants v Welsh Fire

Welsh Fire have the gas needed to keep the Super Giants on the losing path. Jos Buttler and Matthew Short look set to continue racking up the runs, while Sam Cook and Sonny Baker are both backed to snag two wickets or more.
