World-class horses, historic races and a spectacular Sussex setting combine for five memorable days at the Qatar Goodwood Festival.

The Qatar Goodwood Festival returns from Tuesday, 28 July to Saturday, 1 August 2026, bringing many of Europe’s leading horses, trainers and jockeys to one of the most distinctive racecourses in Britain.

Affectionately known as “Glorious Goodwood”, the five-day meeting combines elite Flat racing with the relaxed atmosphere of an English summer garden party. Three Group 1 contests form the centrepiece of a programme which also includes major sprint races, competitive handicaps and opportunities to see some of the sport’s most promising young horses.

A festival rich in history

Racing at Goodwood dates back more than two centuries. The third Duke of Richmond staged a private meeting for local military officers in 1801 before the first public meeting was held the following year.

During the 19th century the fixture developed into one of the highlights of the British social season.

King Edward VII famously described Goodwood as “a garden party with racing tacked on” – a description which still captures the meeting’s combination of sporting quality, fashion and informality. More than 100,000 people now attend the annual festival.

The racecourse itself adds another layer of intrigue. Its sharp turns, downhill gradients and relatively short finishing straight place a premium on balance, tactical speed and positioning. Horses that become unsettled by the contours can quickly lose momentum, while jockeys must avoid allowing their rivals to establish an unassailable advantage approaching the home turn. The straight five-furlong course is also regarded as one of the fastest in Britain.

Tuesday: Staying stars renew rivalry

The first big contest of the festival is on Tueusday with one of its most eagerly anticipated races, the Group 1 Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup over two miles.

Scandinavia and Trawlerman are set to renew the thrilling rivalry they established in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot. Scandinavia caught the front-running Trawlerman close to the finish of that two-and-a-half-mile contest, extending his winning sequence and confirming his position among the outstanding stayers of his generation.

The shorter Goodwood distance could give Trawlerman an opportunity to reverse the result, but Scandinavia is already a proven course specialist, having won the 2025 Goodwood Cup as a three-year-old. Illinois, French Master, Amiloc, Lazy Griff, Rahiebb and Miss Alpilles complete the declared eight-horse field.

The Group 2 Lennox Stakes and Group 2 Vintage Stakes provide further quality on an outstanding opening card.

Wednesday: The Duel on the Downs

The Visit Qatar Sussex Stakes is the festival’s signature race and one of the most prestigious mile contests in international racing.

Known as the “Duel on the Downs”, the race has been won by champions including Brigadier Gerard, Solow and the unbeaten Frankel, who remains the only horse to have claimed the Sussex Stakes twice. Prize money has been increased to £1.5 million for the 2026 running, further strengthening its position among Europe’s richest mile races.

Unbeaten three-year-old Bow Echo provides the central attraction. George Boughey’s colt won the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket before narrowly defeating Gstaad in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Gstaad, who won the Irish 2,000 Guineas between those two defeats, appears to be closing the gap and should provide another formidable challenge. Queen Anne Stakes winner Ten Bob Tony, Opera Ballo and defending champion Qirat are among the other notable contenders in a deep field. Qirat produced one of the greatest shocks in the race’s history when winning at odds of 150-1 in 2025.

Thursday: Fillies take centre stage

Ladies’ Day combines fashion and racing, beginning with the charity Markel Magnolia Cup before the Group 1 Qatar Nassau Stakes becomes the afternoon’s sporting highlight.

Run over approximately one mile and two furlongs, the Nassau Stakes brings together leading three-year-old fillies and accomplished older mares. Previous editions have produced some of Goodwood’s most memorable finishes, including Ouija Board’s dramatic victory over Alexandra Goldrun in 2006.

The unbeaten Diamond Necklace brings outstanding Classic credentials into the 2026 race, having won the French 1,000 Guineas and Prix de Diane. The current 10-horse card also includes highly rated older performers Minnie Hauk, Fallen Angel and See The Fire, creating another fascinating confrontation between the younger and older generations.

Friday: Goodwood’s speed test

Raw speed takes over on Friday in the Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes.

The five-furlong contest has become one of the most important sprint races of the British summer. Battaash made it his own by winning four consecutive editions between 2017 and 2020, repeatedly demonstrating the exceptional speed required to master Goodwood’s downhill sprint course.

The Coral Golden Mile and Group 3 Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes add further depth to the Friday programme.

Saturday: A spectacular finale

The festival concludes with the Coral Stewards’ Cup, one of the biggest and most competitive sprint handicaps of the season.

A maximum field of 28 horses can charge down Goodwood’s six-furlong straight, often dividing into separate groups across the width of the course. The draw, developing pace and condition of the racing surface can all prove decisive, making the Stewards’ Cup one of the most unpredictable – and visually spectacular – races of the week.

The Group 2 Lillie Langtry Stakes and Group 3 Glorious Stakes support the feature race on a closing card which provides a fitting conclusion to five days of outstanding racing.

From the staying confrontation between Scandinavia and Trawlerman to Bow Echo’s attempt to preserve his unbeaten record, the 2026 Qatar Goodwood Festival offers compelling storylines throughout the week. Add the unique racecourse, historic setting and relaxed summer atmosphere, and Glorious Goodwood remains one of the most recognisable and eagerly anticipated occasions in British racing.
