Italy vs Australia Predictions - Tight game expected in Rome
In a much-anticipated rugby clash, Italy looks to replicate their 2022 win against Australia this Saturday. While Australia has historically dominated this fixture, winning 18 of the 19 matches, Italy’s form has seen improvement, highlighting victories in the Six Nations. Despite recent inconsistent performances from both teams, Italy’s strong squad, featuring Paolo Garbisi at 10, looks to seize the advantage. Meanwhile, Australia’s lineup, led by Carter Gordon at flyhalf, must address recent losses and inconsistency to mount a challenge.
- Italy beat Australia in 2022 and aims to do so again.
- Australia historically dominates but is on a losing streak.
- Both teams show recent inconsistent performances.

Italy vs Australia Predictions
Italy defeated Australia back in 2022 and will hope to repeat that feat on Saturday. The Wallabies are improved but haven’t won a game in a while. I can see the visitors winning but I am backing Italy to get withing 9.5 points.

Head to Head
Australia have completely dominated this fixture, winning 18 of their 19 matches against Italy. However, when they last met in 2022, Italy came away with a very impressive 28-27 victory.
Italy Form
Italy are quite inconsistent but they are vastly improved over the last few years. They have regularly won in the Six Nations, beating Wales and Scotland in recent years and forced a draw against France in 2024.
This season they were inconsistent, beating Wales at home, losing narrowly to Ireland at home but suffered heavy defeats to France and England.
In July, Italy toured South Africa in what was expected to be a tough tour. In the first Test, Italy started slowly but fought back and gave as good as they got, eventually losing 42-24. However, a week later, with the Springboks more aware of the threat, won 45-0.
Italy Injuries & Team News
Italy have a strong side out with Paolo Garbisi starting at 10 with Stephen Varney at scrumhalf.
Australia Form
Australia are a very difficult side to read at the moment. They were brilliant in their victory over South Africa in the Rugby Championship at Ellis Park and took the Springboks to the brink again the following week.
But they were then twice outplayed by Argentina at home, however, they did manage to win the first test in the final minutes. Both matches against New Zealand ended in defeat, but the Wallabies were far better and had chances to keep pressure on the All Blacks.
Prior the Rugby Championship, Australia lost their series 2-1 against the British and Irish Lions. They have already played matches on tour, fighting their way to a 19-15 win over Japan in horrid conditions before going down 25-7 last weekend to England.
It is tough to say what Australian side will pitch up on Saturday as they have some brilliant performances but then, like last week, are poor for 80 minutes.
Australia Injuries & Team News
Carter Gordon starts at flyhalf with Jake Gordon coming in at scrumhalf. Rob Valetini has to make do with a spot on the bench as Tom Hooper, Harry Wilson and Fraiser McReight complete the loose-trio. Louis Lynach is worth keeping at eye out at wing.
Verdict
Italy can get close again after beating Australia in 2022. I am backing the hosts to get within a score.
