Hurricanes vs Chiefs Preview

A few weeks ago the Hurricanes beat the Chiefs by three points in Hamilton. I expect this to be tight for large periods, but my money is on the Canes to cover the -3 handicap at home.

  • Hurricanes have won 13 of their last 15 matches.
  • Hurricanes have won their last 8 home matches.
  • Hurricanes have won their last 2 matches against the Chiefs.
  • Chiefs have lost 2 of their last 3 matches.

Head to Head

The Chiefs have won five of their last seven games against the Hurricanes, but the last two have gone in favour of the hosts. Earlier this season the Hurricanes beat the Chiefs 20-17 away from home.

Hurricanes Form

The Hurricanes topped the Super Rugby table by a point after winning 12 of their 14 games during the season. Their only defeats came at the Brumbies and at the Blues.

The Canes have yet to lose at home this season, which should give them a major confidence boost ahead of this match. The Wellington-based outfit comes into this game off the back of four straight wins since their narrow loss at Eden Park.

Last week, the Hurricanes made light work of the Rebels, beating them 47-20 in the quarter-final. While the Melbourne side caused some problems, it was a dominant display by the hosts over 80 minutes.

Hurricanes Injuries & Team News

Prop Xavier Numia has been ruled out of this game due to injury. That is a big blow to the Hurricanes considering the quality Numia brings.

In better news, Tyrel Lomax comes back for a start and Brad Shields is also back in the back-row.

Chiefs Form

The Chiefs have endured a somewhat up-and-down season but still managed a fourth-place finish. They won nine and lost five of their 14 games.

Last week the Chiefs overcame a potential banana skin in the quarter-final, 43-21 at home. The Chiefs had lost two games to the Hurricanes and Blues coming into that knockout fixture.

The Hamilton-based outfit certainly have the ability produce the goods on their day, but whether they can do it against the Canes away from home remains to be seen.

Chiefs Injuries & Team News

The Chiefs have made no changes to their 23-man squad from last week.

Verdict

The Hurricanes are slight favourites at home, but given their form on home soil, I am backing them to cover the -3 handicap.
