Gabon had a stellar World Cup qualifying campaign, losing just once in the group stage but unfortunately still only finished second. That meant they had to go to the playoffs where they suffered a 4-1 defeat to Nigeria on 13 November 2025.
That was their last game before coming into the Africa Cup of Nations. In their opening AFCON fixture, Gabon will count themselves unfortunate to have lost 1-0 to Cameroon.
The Indomitable Lions took a 6th minute lead and Gabon couldn’t find a way through thereafter. The stats show it was a pretty even game with Gabon having the better of possession and 14 shots on goal, three of which were on target – the same as Cameroon.
Mozambique Form
Mozambique are not historically a great threat in the Africa Cup of Nations but they have in recent years become a more competitive outfit. They have also put in some impressive performances this year, none more so than in their 1-0 defeat to Morocco in November this year.
Unfortunately, the Southern African nation drew 2-2 against Chad thereafter and lost 4-1 to Angola in friendlies. Their opening AFCON game ended in a 1-0 loss to Ivory Coast on Christmas Eve.
Mozambique were their usual stubborn selves at the back and looked comfortably for most of the match. They conceded in the 49th minute but seldom threatened to level.
Throughout the game, Mozambique only had three shots on goal, two of which were on target and 44% possession. They will need to find away to offer more threat going forward if they are to get results.

Gabon: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang came off the bench in the opener, as did Mario Lemina. Both of them offer plenty of experience and could start on Sunday.
