Nigeria Missed World Cup – AFCON retribution to follow?
Nigeria failed to qualify for next year’s FIFA World Cup. They topped their AFCON qualifying group but lost in the playoffs in their quest to be at USA 2026.
A 1-1 home draw vs Zimbabwe in March 2025 was followed by a 1-1 draw away to South Africa. They beat Lesotho 2-1 and Benin 4-0, before a 4-1 win over Gabon in the playoff semi-finals.
The Super Eagles lost on penalties to DR Congo in the playoff final following a 1-1 draw. A pre-AFCON friendly saw a 2-1 to Egypt, but they beat Tanzania 2-1 in their Group C opener.

The Carthage Eagles cruised to World Cup qualification with nine wins in ten matches. They won their opening AFCON match on Tuesday.
After sealing their World Cup place in October, they played four senior friendlies. A 1-1 draw with Mauritania preceded a 3-2 win over ten-man Jordan.
They played out an impressive 1-1 draw with Brazil in France before beating Lesotho 2-1. Their AFCON opener saw a 3-1 win over Uganda with 15 shots.
