Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando Da Cruz has admitted his side lacked aggression and attacking efficiency after their 1-0 defeat to Red Arrows in their CAF Confederations Cup first leg on 18 October 2026.
Alassane Diarra scored the winner in the 76th minute, leaving Amakhosi needing a strong response in the return leg to keep their qualification hopes alive.
Da Cruz Unhappy With Chiefs’ Attacking Display
Da Cruz criticised Chiefs’ first-half performance, saying they lacked aggression and failed to compete in individual battles, although he saw improvement after the break. “We played a disappointing first half with no aggression,” he said, admitting they created few chances despite the improved performance.
The coach identified their lack of attacking efficiency as a key concern and called for greater urgency in the final third. “We just lack efficiency, and we must put more weight when we attack,” Da Cruz said.
Da Cruz Defends Vilakazi Substitution
Da Cruz defended his decision to substitute Mfundo Vilakazi, explaining that the midfielder was tired and needed replacing. “It’s not after the substitution of Vilakazi that our team conceded a goal,” he said, pointing out that Chiefs conceded from a corner.
He also blamed the playing surface for making it difficult to implement the team’s usual style. Despite the defeat, Da Cruz insisted Chiefs could improve by creating more chances and making the necessary tactical adjustments.
Chiefs Focus On Crucial Return Leg
Da Cruz remains optimistic about Chiefs’ chances of overturning the deficit in the second leg of the CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round. “We just need to work on that, and it will turn in our favour,” he said, stressing the importance of learning from the defeat.
The return leg is scheduled for 23 October 2026 at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, with kick-off at 18:00 South African time. Chiefs must win by two goals to qualify outright, while a 1-0 victory would send the tie to penalties.
