Crystal Palace vs Fulham

Sitting in 9th and 10th place respectively, both sides have enjoyed very strong seasons and will have dreams of Europe scribbled in alongside their fixture lists. It’s not looking good for Palace, though, who are on a three-match losing streak and have lost four and drawn one of their last five matches. Fulham have won three and lost one of their last four matches, stretching that to six in their last 10.

After a great start to the season, Palace have lost six and drawn one of their last 10, so they are looking vulnerable, including at home, where they haven’t won in five, losing three times. On the road Fulham have won three of their last four, so it’s pointing to a Fulham win.

Liverpool vs Leeds

Liverpool have pushed up from mid-table back into the top four and seem to have put their struggles behind them. Leeds are two points off the drop but have a seven-point cushion, having ended a four-match losing streak to win two and draw three of their last five matches. Liverpool are starting to look like worthy defending champions, turning around a five-defeat in seven matches nightmare to win five of their last seven, including four wins on the bounce.

Liverpool are far from iron-clad at Anfield this season, having lost four of their last nine home games. Leeds gave Man City hell at the Etihad in a thrilling 3-2 defeat, but the fact remains that they have lost seven and drawn two on the road this season. This should be a fairly comfortable Liverpool win, but the better odds would be on goals scored, with neither side having many clean sheets for or against this season.

Brentford vs Tottenham

There’s just one point between the sides and the prospect of Europe within reach for either side if they have a strong finish to the season. Spurs have won their last four against Brentford but have lost five of their last nine matches, including two in their last three. Brentford have buried a poor run of four defeats in six matches by winning their last two matches, although one was against bottom side Wolves and the other against 15th-placed Bournemouth.

Brentford are strong at home, though, winning seven of their last 10 with just one defeat. As for Spurs, on the road they have lost four, drawn one and won one of their last six matches. Hard to balance these stats out in favour of either side, so this has the taste of a draw lingering around it.

Sunderland vs Manchester City

What a New Year’s Day clash this should be. City are in second place, three points off the top of the table. Sunderland have continued their powerful form of the past seven seasons by commanding seventh place in the table and sit just one point behind fifth-placed Chelsea.

City are on a run of eight wins in a row and will be hard to beat, while Sunderland have five draws and two wins from their last nine starts, so they are hard to beat but also not terrifying on the attack. They have scored just nine goals in their last nine matches but held Arsenal to a 2-2 draw at the Stadium of Light. City have scored 23 goals to eight in their last eight games so are a terrifying prospect to opposition defences… but the Citizens can be loose in defence.

City could well run away with it, but a draw or Sunderland win are not out of the question. I’d feel happier about backing a glut of goals, but knowing City they are also likely to concede the first goal, regardless of the result.
