English Premier League Predictions - Matchday 22

Manchester United vs Manchester City

United haven’t won in four matches while City haven’t lost in 13, winning 10 of those matches. Old Trafford used to be a fortress but this season in particular United have had some shockers at home. City are really starting to gel, so this has a visitors’ win written all over it. On the road City have won 7, drawn 1 and lost two and are unbeaten in six. United at home have won just one of their last six matches, losing two.

It’s not much prettier if we look at their recent head-to-head results at Old Trafford, with City winning three matches (combined score 7-0), United winning one and with one match ending in a draw. It’s a big moment in City’s push for the title, and with their forward line starting to flourish it feels like Erling Haaland and Antoine Semenyo could both hit the net.

Leeds vs Fulham

Leeds have won just once in eight matches and as a result they have one eye on the relegation zone eight points below them, yet the bookies seem to be backing their chances of nabbing three points. Perhaps that’s because Leeds’ home form has been good recently. Fulham are unbeaten in six and have won five of their last eight games. They have also won three of their last five on the road, although a few of those wins were against sides in the relegation dogfight.

Leeds’ home form could be the decider - in their last four home matches they have beaten Chelsea 3-1, drawn 3-3 with Leeds, beaten Palace 4-1 and drawn 1-1 with Man United. While this sounds positive from a Leeds perspective, don’t forget Fulham’s form on the road is strong. The sensible bet seems to be on plenty of goals smacking the nets.

Sunderland vs Crystal Palace

Plenty at stake for both sides, with Sunderland not far off European places while Palace will have an eye on the relegation battle. Palace have lost six of their last nine games, with no wins, while Sunderland have three wins, five draws and just two defeats in their last 10 matches.

This is another game where home form informs the most sensible bet. Sunderland haven’t lost in nine home games (four wins) while Palace have lost their last four on the road.

Notts Forest vs Arsenal

Forest are having a nervous time of it near the bottom of the table, so facing up to an Arsenal side that has lost just twice in the League this season is unlikely to fill the side with joy. Arsenal have won nine and drawn one of their last 10 games, while Forest have lost five of their last six.

Arsenal went through a blip on the road recently, drawing with Sunderland and Chelsea, before losing to Aston Villa. They then went on to win their next five on the bounce. Forest have lost three and won one of their last four home games, but they enjoyed a four-match unbeaten streak (three wins) before that.

The odds payout for a Leeds win are juicy, and while you might find a way to convince yourself of that possibility, it’s hard to imagine Arsenal slipping up at this stage. The Gunners are also full of goals, and those odds add better value than a straight win.

Verdict

Man City to overpower United, Leeds to give Fulham a tough time at Elland Road, Sunderland to pick up a win to move them up to the European qualification spot, while Notts Forest to take a mauling from Arsenal.
