English Premier League Predictions, Matchday 28

Liverpool vs West Ham

Liverpool have beaten West Ham in their last four games with a goal spread of 14-2. Despite being third from bottom the Hammers have been in good form of late, losing just one of their last eight games (five wins), while Liverpool have lost two of their last eight, but with six wins.

Liverpool have only lost once at home since the end of November, that defeat being a 2-1 loss to an on-fire Man City side. After an eight-match winless run on the road that started in September, the Hammers have fronted up to the relegation battle and have picked up three wins in their last four away matches, losing only to Chelsea in a 3-2 thriller.

It should be a Liverpool win, but their season has been somewhat up and down, so given West Ham’s desperation I fancy them pulling a big point out of the bag.

Burnley vs Brentford

Burnley are eight points below the relegation watermark and their situation is starting to look hopeless. They’ve lost two, drawn two and won just one of their last five in the League, and with just four wins in 27 I don’t hold out much hope for them against a Brentford side that is just five points off a European spot.

Brentford have also lost two of their last five, but they have pulled out two victories in that stretch and have scored 40 goals to 37, while Burnley have scored just 29 times in 27 games, conceding almost two goals a game. Brentford have won an astounding six of their last seven matches on the road, scoring 13 times and only losing to Chelsea.

Burnley have tasted defeat in six of their last nine home games in the League and have failed to score in five of those nine games. This looks like a surefire win-to-nil result for Brentford.

Newcastle Utd vs Everton

This is a fairly comfortable tie for two teams who look well settled mid-table. Everton come into this clash on the back of two defeats and just five points in their last five games in the League. Newcastle lost four of five games in a fortnight starting at the end of January but have fought back with four wins in five, losing only away to Man City.

On the road Everton have lost just one of their last nine games, picking up five wins. Newcastle are far from solid at home, losing three of their last five games, so I’m backing a score draw.

Leeds vs Manchester City

City have found their form and the team has settled into their new formation as they chase down log-leaders Arsenal, who are once again starting to falter. City have lost just two of their last 23 games, with those defeats coming in a the space of four days away to Man United and Bodo/Glimt.

Leeds have just two wins in their last eight League matches, but they’ve played out four draws in that time so they’re a tough nut to crack as they look to pull away from the drop zone. Leeds have been good at home and have scored 19 goals in their last 10 games, with five wins, while City have won six of their last 10 games on the road.

In City’s last six games (W2, D2, L2) they have been goalless twice and scored just seven goals, so Leeds will be eyeing this as a chance to pull a shock win out the bag. City should maul the hosts, but this looks like a tricky one to call, but it does look like we could be in for a bagful of goals.

Verdict

Liverpool and West Ham to share the points, while Burnley to take a beating from Brentford.

Newcastle and Everton to play out a draw, while the goals to flow at Elland Road.
