The Blues beat Man City 1-0 in the Champions League final in Porto. Kai Havertz’s strike was the difference as they turned in another solid defensive performance.

Tuchel’s side have played three pre-season friendlies. They won 2-1 against Bournemouth and 2-1 against Arsenal before a 2-2 draw against Tottenham.

Chelsea gave Cesar Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, Ben Chilwell, Reece James, Jorginho and Mason Mount extended breaks after international tournaments.

Romelu Lukaku is close to rejoining Chelsea but might not be available in time.

Villarreal finished seventh in La Liga last season. They went on a great run in the Europa League where they beat Manchetser United in a penalty shootout in the final. 

The Yellow Submarine have had a poor pre-season, unable to win in six games.

Unai Emery’s side lost against Valencia, Marseille and Leicester with draws against Lyon, Levante and Leeds.

Centre back Pau Torres is unavailable after representing Spain Euro 2020 and the Olympics.

Goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli is doubtful alongside midfielders Etienne Capoue, Dani Parejo, Francis Coquelin, Vicente Iborra and winger Samuel Chukwueze.
